With or without the "but," "our team will ever fight" is part of the sentence.  You could then take it as "Victory's in store [because] whatever the score, our team will ever fight."  Or you could take it as "...[regardless of the score or whether victory's in store], our team will ever fight."  It certainly was never meant to insinuate that we would defeat other teams by losing embarrassingly to them.
