Many thought something would be announced by Wednesday, when Taylor said he hoped to meet with Snyder and discuss his future. Instead, fans are still nervously checking their phones for updates. Taylor did not return a message seeking comment for this story, and the only statements Snyder has made have been one-liners to reporters camped outside K-State’s football complex.

The waiting game has gone on long enough that one news outlet inadvertently posted a pre-written story announcing Snyder’s retirement and quickly took it down. And for North Texas athletic director Wren Baker to take to Twitter and calm fans about the rising speculation that Mean Green coach Seth Litrell is a potential candidate to replace Snyder, if he retires.

How did we get here? There are a few explanations.

I love how also ksu sources are trying to paint this as "Snyder's decision."  Pretending like they believe he hasn't made up his mind.

HE WANTS TO RETURN. This is all about if the AD and president feel comfortable pushing him out or not.  The big donors must mostly also want him out, or it wouldn't have dragged on as long as it has. But no one wants to seem like the bad guy pushing the man who saved their program out the door.

Getting sick of it, either have the guts to push him out and CLAIM IT AS YOUR DECISION, or let the legend have one more year

While not Littrell's fault, the drama at KSU (and its effects on timing) could produce a worst case scenario for North Texas.  If Kansas State drags this out for much longer but does eventually end up with Littrell (a deal that has likely been in the works ever since he hired a new agent months ago), then the following are all well within the realm of possibility:

1. Littrell scrambles to assemble a recruiting class at KSU and freely picks from North Texas.

2. Littrell takes all the top NT coaches/recruiters with him, leaving us with a skeleton crew for a bowl game and thus likely to be annihilated by any decent team, which would really put a sour note on a rare 9-win season.

3.  The aforementioned poached coaches make an impassioned appeal to any of our graduate-transfer-eligible seniors to play their final year at KSU.

4. Meanwhile, due again to timing, we miss out on the top tier of eligible new coaches.  And, whoever does end up being hired doesn't have time to save our recruiting class before the early signing period.

This is, once again, a worst case scenario and not a prediction.  Still, it's really starting to frustrate me how the various egos at Kansas State, as they negotiate Snyder's proud exit, could really hamper our program and set us back for years to come--not that KSU has the slightest concern for how they're hurting North Texas, of course.

knowing what we know of litrell, if a deal is/has been in place, im sure Wren knows...I cant imagine Seth would leave him holding the bag with no fair warning.

I agree 100%.  The longer this drags the worse it is for us if Seth ends up leaving.

If it's a done deal and Wren is not already prepared then we are in serious trouble as a program.

Wren needs to be prepared whether it’s a done deal or not. If it is a done deal, I’m sure he knows and is already making calls.

Oh, I have no doubt he's making calls--and perhaps has been for some time now.  But, making phone calls to candidates is not the same as having someone in place who can recruit and persuade our commits to stick around.
