How does MTSU have such a crappy fan base with this showing?

I was surprised by the crowd. When AState played there in 2011 I went and they were 2-7 and it was looking like rain and they had as many or more actually in the stands.

Maybe they have Stockstill fatigue.

I was under the impression Middle Tennessee actually had a pretty good fan base. I guess I was mistaken

They have averaged right around 15k the last two years.  A lot of fans are sick of Stockstill but you always run the risk of nosediving when you fire a winning, but not super successful coach.

HOLY SHIT.

MTSU forced a punt with 1:05 left in the game.  However the punt team broke the huddle with 12 players and UAB gets  first.

Last time I saw anything that dumb was AState at Kansas in 1981. Kansas trails 16-10 late but had all their timeouts so are going to kick. AState has 12 on the field, first down Kansas and they score a TD. Guess that's a once every 40 or so years screw up.

They have found their groove. He won 10 in 2009, lost 10 in 2011. Since 2011 won 8, 8, 6, 7, 8, 7, and 8 (pending bowl game).

Used to be most any fan base outside of Nebraska or Michigan types would be thrilled by that today people focus more on the fact there hasn't been a conference championship since 2006, which was his first season.

I think for everyone except the very, very, top: they understand they are on shaky ground.  For the G5 fans, the days of Non AQ to AQ jumps is probably over, but they want to try and get into the P5 and they know time is running out.  For the low to mid tier P5 fans, they are afraid of P5 -> P4 contraction.

Everyone seems to know success in the next 10 years or so might decide if you end up in the real top division, or the pretend top division.

That's why I say we need to win and have good home attendance. Forget TV and moving to AAC OR MWC. Sellout home games and dominate Cusa.

There are 65 power programs today. If that number is different 10 years from now I think it is more likely that the number will be smaller instead of larger

That is what I believe.

P5 -> P4

Makes the brackets easier.   I mean does UT really want to drag around Iowa St?  Does Clemson really love being in a conference with Wake Forest?  Does Alabama love having Vanderbilt in the SEC so much that they will hand them tens of millions a year?

Sometimes I feel like they should just break down and let the 20 blue blood teams go and do their own thing. They’ve become a bastardization of college athletics anyway.

There are many teams in the P5 that really have no place anymore (like the ones you mentioned). I suspect the big name programs are tired of subsidizing them and having to put up with the rest of us.

They'll never "break away" by choice because they have everything the want now.  They get to protect themselves (and not play players or be responsible for injuries) by pretending this is amateur football,  they have complete control of the TV money, they have complete control of the playoff access, and they have can make rules for all of FBS without consulting the G5, by NCAA law.

This is as good as it gets for them.  Becoming a minor league would be a disaster.

Well I guess the way I thought about it they would be able to do all those things, but become the champions league of college football. If you look at the ratings, I’m assuming that the majority of viewership comes from those big games anyway.

Everyone else would just be piddly little NCAA football with pesky amateurism rules and all the other annoying shit that comes along with it.

We already have a lower league, the FCS.  The blue bloods want that layer of G5 to protect them from players being able to sue them for use of their image, for workmans comp, for salary, or heavens forbid unionization.

The P5 don't want a clean break, then want the lower level people muddling the waters.  They'll just push more people out of the big money, they did it once with the G5, and they'll do it again with the lower level P5.
