FRISCO — Conference USA media day felt completely different for North Texas men’s basketball coach Grant McCasland on Monday compared to his first time at the event a year ago.

Back then, McCasland was just trying to teach the players he inherited from a downtrodden eight-win team coached by Tony Benford that playing hard was a vital part of winning games.  The Mean Green are way beyond that point now.

“I have talked to Roosevelt Smart a lot about it,” McCasland said of taking the next step as a program. “Our approach to winning can’t just be to play hard. That is the initial part of winning games. Not that we didn’t want to execute at a high level, but your execution better be elite when people know what’s coming.”
