This is just incredible.

Everyone here can remember how maddening 3rd downs were last year (heck, save 2013, for the past decade+).
As amazing as Fine and the offense has been...   What this defense is doing so far this year is beyond comprehension.  They're all playing out of their minds.
Nate is looking like the cover corner we knew he could be.
Kemon is just a lock-down guy... you're not throwing on him.
Khari, EJ & Brandon are flying to the ball & making sure tackles.
Rod is collapsing pockets like crazy.
...and Jamie King!  ...wreaking havoc on the edge.

So far, this defense is really pushing 2013's & 2003's defenses, in my mind, as my favorite defense.

What I think is further proof in continuity/growth of scheme is that we all that Bryce English would be the savior to this Defense, and don't get me wrong, he definitely makes a visceral difference. But it is everyone else that has been working in this formula for three years now who are redeeming their prior performances and then some.

I know it's been said several times on here before, but simply HAVING Bryce to spell Tauaalo allows Young to play End, which is a humongous factor in why the defense is doing so well.   Having TJ & Rod on the field at the same time, instead of alternating at the nose, is making everyone behind them better.

I am super excited about this defense, but my one cause to tap the brakes would be that we must remember all three teams have been breaking in new coaches and systems.

LaTech will be the true test of how far this defense has evolved.

The run defense should be much higher than 18th.

Just like in the SMU game...with seconds to go and just before that last ua TD we had held them to 56 total yards rushing.

For 59 minutes we held an SEC team to 56 total yards rushing...In Their House!!!!

We have a top 10-level run defense.

I've always told you football is won by the guys who start the play with a hand on the ground.

This defense is much better because of the defensive line.  It's allowing every behind them to maximize their potential as the slogan goes.

Everyone is getting to play their role, because they aren't having to cover up for DL deficiencies.   If all Tauaalo and English do is be complete bears and force two linemen to block them, then that keeps guards of the linebackers.  Everything else just building off of that.

This is manifest so far in Ejiya's and Garner's (remember how much grief Garner was taking around here last year??) ridiculous stat lines.  Those guys are E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E, and I believe that's due to DL play.

EDIT:   If Reffett sticks around, and continues to keep the monsters up front, I wonder what Grayson & Gabriel's stats are going to look like in 2020 & beyond.

Just used the statistics provided here in an email to the Butkus Award email contact in requesting EJ be added to the watch list.

The list they have online currently was released in July.    I don't know if they do mid-season additions like Belitnikoff did with theirs recently, but I fully expect to see EJ on that list if they do.   He's playing most of the dudes on the list under the table.

http://thebutkusaward.com/thebutkusawards/default.aspx

For those of you spinning wheels, voting hundreds of times per day online for Mason Fine, please stop, and spend 10 minutes of your time emailing for a guy who (based on his play) deserves just as much of your time:

Ron Arp - rarp@butkusfoundation.org

Then, for any of y'all on Twitter, tweet the following dudes on the Butkus Award selection committee requesting they advocate for adding EJ to the watchlist (since @butkusaward has not posted in almost 10 years):

Tom Ciskowski Assistant Director of Player Personnel Dallas Cowboys

Pete Fiutak Publisher/editor College Football News

Kirk Herbstreit College football analyst ESPN

Lional Vital Director of College Scouting Dallas Cowboys

Dave Wannstedt Analyst Fox Sports

Charles Davis Analyst Fox Sports
