Outside of a few teams in both the American and the MWC, those conferences aren't setting the world on fire either. Just win and worry about us.

Wanting to get to a better conference is worrying about us.

Downvote me all you want. The sun will come up tomorrow, and CUSA will still be bad and full of middling directional schools. Guess what? Every other team in CUSA thinks they're too good to be in it. The only way out is to win. Wren can't just pick up the phone and move us somewhere else.

I understand talking about the conference and realignment during the offseason, but come on man. The season is just getting started.

oh I doubt Charlotte thinks they belong any level higher than what they currently are. We never should have added that trash program

American Conference
Progress:
 plus-6

The Power 6 narrative didn't get off to a great start in Week 1, but Week 2 was a much different story. Houston dominated Arizona. USF proved it wasn't taking a step back without Quinton Flowers, as former Alabama QB Blake Barnett looked sharp in a win over Georgia Tech. And while UCF's McKenzie Milton had a rare bad game, the Knights kept rolling, too. Power 6? Maybe not, but the American clearly has some teams that will compete for a New Year's Six bowl.

Good God, man.  We're 2-0 for the first time in like an eleventy gazillion years, both wins by blowouts, and we're pissing and moaning about how our hundred dollar bills aren't freshly pressed.

Conference realignment is announced is the off season. It starts during season,  gotta strike whuke the iron is hot.

There hasn't been a better time to repoistion ourselves then now.

All this pissing and moaning about the conference is dumb at this point. We're stuck until probably 2023. Even then we might not like the way things are shaken up. All you can do is win and make a case for why North Texas football should be elevated.

If conference makes no difference then why should we want to be elevated?  It's a no-brainer to say we need to win.  That's why we play.

I'd like to be in the AAC or the MWC because of the caliber of teams.  It's easier to recruit to higher-perceived conferences if you show signs of competitiveness.  I believe that we would have increased attendance playing Houston, Tulsa, Memphis, Navy, Cincinnati and Tulane.  We already know that SMU is a good draw. And, the better conferences get the better bowl games.

At the least, give the conference commissioner cause to look at your facilities and record when expansion time comes.

SMU would never allow us to squeeze into the AAC and it would be redundant for the league unless they kicked SMU out. The MWC would move our night games an hour or 2 later, plus make away game travel tougher. I love being in CUSA. Some of our teams struggled tonight, others handled their business. If we aren’t going to be in the P5, let’s just win the CUSA every year. First step, win it once. Then we can blow our horn about how we deserve to play better teams every week.

As has been reiterated ad nauseum, you can pretty much write off us joining the AAC. SMU, while a completely inferior university in all metrics except cost of attendance, will never allow UNT to join. From the conference's perspective, it doesn't do them any good either. They don't need two teams in the same TV market.

MW makes more sense, however we don't know what MW is going to look like after the PAC-12 raids it during the realignment bonanza to come. It's future iteration might turn out to be just like CUSA. We just don't know at the moment.

Our primary focus -- we fans and the administration -- should be on this season. NT is 2-0 against two poor teams. SMU sucks and UIW is a poor FCS squad with some bright spots.

The run game is weak. Even if NT goes to Fayetteville and beats the Hogs (please, please, do), they will be no closer to a conference title game than they were down big in the 4th quarter in December in Boca Raton.

NT is going to a place where 29,519 is _poor_ attendance.

Less than two years ago, WKU lifted the league title for the second-straight season. Now they allowed 31-straight points to an FCS squad at home. We can focus on building a great program. For we fans, that means tempering expectations a bit, enjoying the good times, and making sure we can crack 20K each week, rain or shine.

Oh, I wrote about CUSA this week.

ok. First it needs to be acknowledged that this was really a piss poor weekend for C-USA.

Seriously FAU beating Air Force and UNT dismembering a FCS-team were pretty much the highlights. This week:

vs Sun Belt 0-3 (OUCH!)

vs Mountain West 1-2

vs FCS 4-1 (but that one IS embarrassing)

vs P5 0-1

Given how much stability at coaching there was this season, this is extremely disappointing.

Now to why does it matter? Well, it does not matter all that much if you only look short term and don't care too much if UNT can crack the AP rankings or somesuch. If you were a player (who should only care about the next game) or generally are a person who only cares about what they can control short term, that is a logical attitude. I can't call you an idiot, for It might allow you a happier life.

However, if you care about long-term development you should see that this will affect UNT athletics for the following reasons:

1) UNT depends on its conference for TV revenue etc. If the conference looks bad, it will not have many marquee matchups. Beyond that, if all our brethren fanbases are unenthused, they will not watch tv, and will not go to games, which makes for a bad tv product. This, in turn, leads to bad contracts for C-USA and UNT will suffer from it whether it wins the conference or not.

2) Those same folks will not come to away games at Apogee, which in turn costs money too (although likely not too much)

3) It is easier to hype up UNTs own fanbase if the opponent is also hyped up by the media. That is just hard to do with 3-5 teams.

4) The playoff committee has shown that they are really tough on G5s schedules. If UNT ever dreams of going to a new years 6 bowl it probably needs to build up its own reputation and then also beat a conference that has somewhat of a reputation. Results like this week allow the AAC and MW to create the idea that they really are tougher than the C-USA. Heck even the Sun-belt has a case right now.

5) It is easier for UNTs players to attract NFL attention if they have a lot of film against opponents the scouts think might be any good.  This helps both the future of the current players at UNT and also UNT recruiting.

6) Playing better opposition also creates more chances at honor and fame in the minds of potential recruits (note: it does NOT matter whether this is true, only whether 17-year-old kids might be enticed to see it this way by rival coaches).

In short: No matter its own record, UNT profits from being in a strong C-USA rather than being in a weak C-USA.
