I'll not try to speak for Silver, but as for me, I don't see those as two separate things. Put on the show, the word will spread, and soon the crowd will be timely. The competitive team is going to assist in this. JMHO.

The problem is not just singled to the band.  Yes the dotting of the I at Ohio State, The Penn State Blue Band Flip, and some of the other great pregame band traditions are great, but there are others that have great pregame traditions that do the same thing that don't need the band.

Texas A&M, Virginia Tech (Enter Sandman), Michigan's "Go Big Blue" sign, etc... come to mind.

Others have great in game traditions: Aggies swaying to the fight song, USC lighting the olympic torch, Wisconsin's "jump around", Florida States War Chant, Florida's Gator Chomp, OSU's wave, Penn State's stadium wave, etc...

The problem is UNT has no pre game traditions that bring fans in early, no in game traditions that fans look forward to, nothing.  It is a football game and a football game only, and that is where the problem lies.

This is exactly what I told Dr. Lane at the focus group that I was invited to attend back in 1990.

I said that it appears that North 'Texas contracts to put on a game. All the parties show up in the appropriate uniforms. They all do what they are minimally expected to do, but (except for the football team) little else. The Band shows up and plays their play list, and they put on a half-time show. The cheerleaders show up in the correct uniforms and do gymnastics and their prerequisite "cheers" but little else. And the Talons show up with the cannon and fire it the prerequisite number of times, but nothing else. But there was no apparent connection among these groups. They do their own thing and go their separate ways after the game.

As I said in another post, Dr. Lane didn't want to hear that.

I'm not about to email our leadership about this. I feel there are so many other things they should be focused on. The fans have more to do with the pregame atmosphere than the Green Brigade or ath department. I'd rather have them focused on keeping SL and staff intact, building financial support, improving facilities. Winning is the biggest thing our programs need and is the PRIMARY reason we don't have more fans and a better atmosphere.

Lastly, I think the Green Brigade suggestions should go straight to the band director or dean. I doubt anyone from athletics has much input into the actual routine. They simply provide the time and WB would be nuts try and cut that time. That would go over like a s*&$ sandwich.

I think Virginia Tech has the best entrance in all of college football followed by Clemson. But those two places have consistent sellouts and as passionate of fans as anyone int he country.

AND finally, WHERE IS THE FRIGGIN BELL!  A little lesson for all who don't know....it pre-dates the cannon as a spirit icon/instrument.

AND, does anyone born after 1980 know what old North Texas tradition (few as they are) the spirit bell represents?

Yes, where is the bell.

Yes, but I was born just prior to 1980.

The Spirit Bell is now a permanent fixture in the University Union.

It sits at the top of the main stairwell along the East entrance.

That's not the one they are referring to.

The new one which is an exact replica made by the same manufacturer that was mounted on an airport tug is sitting on a farm in Bonham, Texas.

There have been efforts to get it back but nothing has come of those efforts just yet.

Who brought it out there?

According to the "traditions page" this has been going on since 2002. Is that correct?

The bell could be part of the Band's march into the stadium. AND after it's set up in the stadium,  much like it was originally used (for curfew), it can be rung to call everyone in to be part of the pregame celebrations.

It doesn't need a tug. The Talons managed just fine for years with a trailer.

Preaching to the choir brother.

I tried to "suggest" against inserting another motorized vehicle....especially one so heavy and complicated as the tug is,.....when I first heard about the loaning of another curfew bell, and I cited the condition (at the time)...of the Mean Green Machine Model A as the perfect example.

And when it ran...it was pretty cool.  But just like so many areas concerning athletics back then the tug and model A were allowed to decline, so the owners of the tug took it back and parked it.

As the curator (I guess that's what I am?)..of Boomer I know exactly how the owners feel when something you've worked so hard to provide is shit on.

To me, the biggest obstacle would be talking the present owners of the Bell into allowing it to be remounted on a trailer.......like it was originally. Taking it back and fourth from the storage area to the stadium would be pretty manageable. It used to be pulled into Fouts with what looked like an Army . surplus jeep.  A John Deere Gator-like vehicle could do the job nicely.

And as to maintenance. A bell on a trailer is pretty low maintenance.

Bring back the go kart that Scrappy used to drive around the track at Fouts.  Have him lead the team out on the field like the Oregon Duck on the Harley.

Get everyone in the stadium to do the North Texas chant leading into the hype entry music at a minimum.

This... if you want an entrance, make it unique. A massive North Texas chant leading into some hype music and the team running out would be the right way to go. This would require buts in the seats earlier then normal.

As the Band is massing at the entrance behind "Spriki" (I would have preferred that they had call him something like "Victor") getting ready to make their Grand Entrance the crowd could be doing a GREEN BRIGADE chant to bring them out.

After the pregame show, the Band creates the tunnel for the team to enter the field and they ( and the cheer staff) lead the crowd in a MEAN GREEN chant.

As both teams are assembling on the field for the initial kick-off, start the NORTH TEXAS chant.

Alternate the NORTH TEXAS and MEAN GREEN chants during the game. Use the MEAN GREEN chant for crucial situations......mainly defensive stands. Use the NORTH TEXAS chant for time outs.

Yeah...Our cheer"leaders" should definitely take up their namesake better.
