Yes, the defense was bad. But the offense factored more in the losses as the year went on.
I think Chandler's injuries affected his throwing accuracy. When he went into hyper-mode later in the year, many times it resulted in quick 3-and-outs, flipped the field for the opponent, and provided little rest time for the defense.
Poor coaching decisions on offense also were to blame. Shotgun formation on the goal line instead of under center. Pass plays called when we only needed 1-2 yards for a first. Several times going for unnecessary 4th downs early in games, neglecting makeable FGs. Going for 4th downs from our own side of the field and missing left the defense in some bad situations.
BYU has always had a lot of older athletes because of their mission service. I absolutely believe it helps their athletic programs.
Many head coaches want older players on their roster. Not just because of experience, but maturity and more adaptable sometimes than younger players.
