UNT Dallas College Of Law's Felecia Epps On Raising Test Scores, Revamping Law School

The four-year-old UNT Dallas College of Law is about to get a new dean. Felecia Epps comes from Florida A&M University, which faced similar challenges with getting its would-be lawyers to pass the bar exam.

Last year, a little more than half of the first-time test takers from FAMU passed. UNT Dallas had a 59 percent pass rate, the lowest for a Texas law school. Epps, who's replacing retiring dean Royal Furgeson, will also have to focus on getting UNT Dallas fully accredited with the American Bar Association. For now, the law school has provisional accreditation.

In our Friday Conversation, Epps talked to KERA's Rick Holter about how similar issues were handled at her old university — and why she was dismissed. 

On improving bar exam test scores:

You really have to have an approach that starts to work with the students before they begin law school, where you're really driving home to them the seriousness of what they're about to do, starting to work with them on legal analysis, reading comprehension skills. And those things are currently being worked on. Then you provide them with some top-notch, intensive bar preparation programs.

On why accreditation can be tough for schools to obtain:

The [American Bar Association] wants to be very careful to be sure law schools are providing students what they need to succeed in law school and pass the bar. Their interest is understandable because the students invest quite a bit, not just in finances, but also in terms of time and effort. So you want to make sure they're getting everything they need in school so they can succeed in the practice of law.

We have to go to all the way to Florida A & M to hire a replacement Dean of the UNT Dallas Law School?  No other Asst Law School Deans from so many great universities in the State of Texas were approached or applied for the job?

      If we win out reg season we are in?

      Minnesota with a 3rd straight Quad 1 win. Our win in their house is looking better every game. Baring a collapse, Memphis is all but guaranteed a spot. Prior to their loss at Temple, some bracket experts had them as a 4 seed. They're 5-2 in Quad 1 games and 10-3 in Quad 1 and 2 with wins against Missouri, UConn, Michigan State, Clemson, Ole Miss, all of which are in the top 35 of NET. The resume is too strong unless they pretty much lose out. Cougar guy is wrong, though. Independent bracket experts with good track records of guessing the field still have UNT as being in contention. It's a longshot but not dead.

      TX State to the PAC 2?

      It’s interesting because I know the perception of the new PAC and AAC is that the PAC will be stronger, but where would Texas State rather go? It seems like AAC for a variety of reasons. I’m not convinced the new PAC is better than the AAC. UNLV and New Mexico holding back in the MWC, with the Northern Illinois and GCU ads have the future PAC in a bit of limbo. They have to keep performing or they will fall back fast. The SBC and AAC currently are the more stable forces, hence a certain level of power and leverage lives there. To me the PAC must break the bank to get Memphis or they are not going to lift on takeoff. GMG

      Join the Infantry in Houston - Tuesday, 2/11 at 8pm

      Rob Lanier, former SMU head coach, found out what the Infantry could do last February at Moody Coliseum. So when he moved over to Rice, inside sources suggest he slipped Tim Spaghetti some cash to make sure his home game against UNT would be on a weeknight this season. But I say, "Too bad, Rob! You can't escape us!" If you're in Houston, or are retired and can make the trip, or want to use a couple of half days like I did, join us at the terrible Tudor Fieldhouse on Tuesday, 2/11 at 8 p.m. The game has the later start because it'll be on ESPNU as the "west coast game." There are just under a hundred seats left behind our bench which would be group-rated at $25. For the second straight year I want to sell the section out. What'll make it better is the sea of green will be on national TV. It'll be different without Scott Screamin' Pera on the Rice bench, but we'll still have plenty to taunt Lanier about. Like how his son has to follow him around to maintain a D1 scholarship. And don't forget the UNT Dallas debacle. Here's what we did last year. We bought about 70 tickets, plus whatever the team was allotted, and the local alumni who bought on their own. If you are interested in joining our group for the game, message me. I've got pending communication out with the Houston alumni chapter to see if they will plan to do anything before the game like last year.       24/25 MBB Attendance Tracker

      12,400 announced at Providence today, who came into the game with a record of 9-10. Providence is about the same distance to Boston as Denton is to Dallas.
