He had “multiple offers to Junior Colleges,” but ended up marrying Peggy Wanker (now Bundy) and was doomed to a life of selling women’s shoes.

There's a stat that points this out.  Across all levels of college ball, 25% of those players who are on scholarship as a freshman are not on scholarship as a sophomore.

And it seems like the number is less than 50% that make it to senior year.  Kind of eye opening when you think about how much work goes into it, to finally get a scholarship, and then to see so many that never fully take advantage of the opportunity.
