I never bought into the notion that he quit because he wasn't getting enough protection from his OL.  I always thought there was something else associated with his departure.  His favorite receiver, Sam Dribewll (?),  quit the team the day after a successful outing against Rice.

Not to diminish Fine's accomplishments--at all--but one great thing is that he has more than 1 or at most 2 go-to receivers on the field and available to him.  That's a huge bonus.

Plus, he has great touch on his deep throw and knows the playbook like the back of his hand.

This.  Having receivers that can actually catch the dadgum ball on the later progressions of your read is extremely important.   The job SL and Co has done with our receiving core is nothing less than astonishing, and it is equally astonishing that DMac and Co couldn't get the same production out of them, and by production, I mean not dropping balls when you're wide open and they hit you in the bread basket.

Yes, he and the late San Dibrell were a package deal coming out of HS in north SA. I had a waiter once who noticed my Mean Green gear and said they knew Gio. From what that person said, Gio just got sick of losing and quit for that reason.

That would require them to practice the new thing called a forward pass.  🤷🏼‍♂️😂
