I think that Sonny Dykes success at SMU will depend on who he can get as a defensive coordinator.  Sonny is a helluva offensive coach and coordinator but his record as a head coach is four games under .500 (41-45).  That is attributable to a 1-11 record his first year at Cal.  Still, he has only had three winning years in seven as a head coach.

I'm a little surprised that SMU was willing to take a chance.

I must be in the minority but I think it's a smart hire for SMU.

Has HC experience so should be able to step in and maintain what Morris began to build.  Knows the state/region well.  Probably would enjoy stability so he's less of a flight risk (as opposed to someone like Sumlin).

Honestly, if Littrell had gone elsewhere, Dykes would've been on my shortlist of replacement candidates

ponyfans.com is surprisingly subdued on this.  Whole thread about admitting that they're one of the have nots in the G5 and that their coaching search just doesn't generate excitement.  I was pretty surprised to read that.  I guess not even a cardigan is enough protection against the kick in the balls of your coach fleeing before your bowl game for better pastures.

I was really surprised by some of what I read in that thread. A number of folks on PonyFans appear to recognize the actual state SMU football. Of course, a number of them don't or won't.

Oh wow!    They hired their version of Dan McCarney!

I'm excited for them.      ...and for us.

They are all going to Arkansas.
