Top C-USA assistants in terms of earnings (public institutions only). I extracted the 50 highest paid C-USA assistants:

image.png.2b63a258b372f6044c019bb64a14a4d1.png

A few Observations:

-70 assistants in C-USA make 100k or more (excluding Rice who is not listed due to being private and not making the info available)

-UNT has among the highest salary pools, maybe the highest in C-USA. 7 out of 9 UNT assistants are in C-USAs top 50. UNT seems to be outspending everybody in the West.Lets hope that yields some more retention this season.

-Really... Kendal Briles the highest paid coordinator... don't get me wrong he is a good OC, but with the baggage he brought, I gotta think FAU could have gotten him cheaper.

- Generally the Florida schools are investing the most at the top, with UNT, MTS, Marshall and WKUU next up. But FAU and FIU pay a lot less to their position coaches

-La Tech spends the money more on position coaches. UTEP wasn't underspending as much as I thought they did.

-Wow. I am surprised at how little Southern Miss is paying. Their DC makes what UNTs position coaches are.

- a decent position coach in C-USA Makes about 110-125k, that is where there is a huge cluster.

-Coachees making 75k or less can primarily be found at Charlotte, MTSU, USM and ODU

Welll.... that is not exactly what I said. I like Reff and think his system isn't nearly as bad as some heree make it. But that said, when looking at this, one might indeed wonder whether he is delivering enough bang for the buck and whether UNT is now at a point where it could go and poach other C-USA teams coordinators, provided they are rather on the bottom of the list here, like USMs D-coordinator.

Depending on how things go, maybe something to consider after the 2018 season.

There is questionable validity in this list. Several of these coaches listed have moved to different universities or different positions.

I like Reff and his system, but we have to get players in place to make it a success. Losing English hurt a lot. The coach I think should be feeling the heat is Brown.

I agree that Brown should be feeling the heat, but I think Ref should as well. Ref coaches safeties and McClain regressed this year. Brown is coaching corners and they have a hard time locating the ball. Ref is making too much for the way the defense has performed. Last time I saw Brown's salary, he was making 95K. That's too much for corners who perform the way ours do.

This is an interesting chicken/egg question.

For the 3-3-5 to work, we need a stud NT and ILB. We don't have that. But shouldn't Reffett be trying to fix those issues?

Reff's defense will work for us the way the air raid works for us, but it's still missing the pieces. We have got to bring in the right players to make it work, and the grace period for Reff is pretty much about to be up.

I bet he gets another year with English & a JUCO LB haul to make it work.
