You have not been following Dickey too closely since his time at UNT, have you?

I was thinking the same thing. Memphis is 8th in the nation in passing yards

Paxton Lynch was a first round draft pick and Riley Ferguson is predicted to be picked in the later rounds this year

Yep.   Dickey is a smart football guy.   He understands the tools at his disposal, and he tailors his offense to get the most out of those tools.

If you're in the Big West & Sun Belt Conferences, you have huge, road-grading OL & some really good RB's, your run a smashmouth run-heavy attack.
Got a Paxton Lynch with some nice WR talent & some quick-footed OL?   Run the spread!

I'm 100% sure that he would keep the spread at SMU... because that is the talent he has there.

...He ain't going there.

Dickey wouldn't want 2M a year to coach in the premiere conference platform for elevation to a P5 job?  Strange.

That said it ain't happening nor was it ever on SMU's radar.

Oh I’ve followed him well! He’s only labeled as the Memphis OC for pay purposes. He only serves as the assistant HC in a mentor role to Justin Fuentes and Coach Norvell. He does not call the plays which has been fortunate for Memphis.  His role has been discussed multiple times on the board even confirmed by an ESPN article. He’s the last person you want as a play caller. There is a reason Justin Fuente didn’t take him to VA Tech!

You said that defenses wouldn't have to worry about defending against the pass.  You said they would only have to worry about the 3rd down draw.  But that doesn't describe Dickey's offenses at all in recent years.

Dickey brought the spread offense to Texas State while Franchione was there his 2nd time.  Memphis's passing offense has shot through the roof while Dickey's been there.

"Labeled as the Memphis OC for pay purposes."  They just want to pay somebody like an FBS offensive coordinator even though he vehemently disagrees with their philosophy and contributes nothing to their offensive success?  C'mon, he would have been fired long ago if he didn't share their philosophy and if he weren't contributing to their success.  Regardless of whether he's calling the plays at Memphis, that's the kind of offense he will bring if he is ever hired again as a head coach.

Oh, and by the way, Dickey was the guy who recruited Paxton Lynch.

How many coaches have P5 conferences hired from SMU in recent decades?

And Morris's hire has far more to do with what he did at Clemson than anything he "accomplished" at SMU.

Laughably absurd to think his time at SMU was less important to the Arkansas hire than what he did at Clemson.  SMU was dead last in scoring offense when Morris took over.  This past year SMU was 9th in total offense.  Say what you want but taking SMU from 1-11 in 2014 to 7-5 in the AAC in three years is impressive.  That 2014 SMU team was the worst one I've seen and I've seen some TERRIBLE teams.  The roster now is stock full of P5 recruited talent.  Played undefeated UCF to within one touchdown and had the ball in our hands at the end with a chance to tie.  We're just not there yet but Morris has the arrow pointed straight up.  It is a tremendous situation to walk into for a head coach with 17 returning starters.

SMU is not in the MWC and SMU will never be P5 again, ever.

1) SMU is a stepping stone, like all G5 schools. Not a ton of coaches go from G5 HC to G5 HC. There's just not much reason for it. The goal is to make big money AND win a championship. SMU offers no path to that any more than any other G5.

2) Morris was what? 14-22 at SMU? If he didn't come from Clemson already with a ton of interest, he wouldn't have been on anyone's radar for what he's done at SMU, no matter how much they sucked before he got there.

3) Morris is still a great coach and he did a good job there.

4) Most of DD's offenses were similar to UNT's before he got to Memphis. Things changed when he got to Texas State and worked with Mike Schulz (it was HIS up-tempo offense they ran).

5) He was SENT to recruit Paxton Lynch when an administrator gave Fuente a not about him. He had very little in the way of offers. That said, yes, DD was the one who saw him, said "Hell Yeah", and got him signed.

6) He's done a great job at Memphis and I think if he wanted to, he'd be a much better HC now. I still think of him as more of a running game specialist than an overall OC/offensive coach.

7) I also think he'd be a good fit for SMU because I don't see him necessarily using it as a stepping stone. It might HAPPEN anyway (if he's successful, they'll come to him), but he wouldn't view it like that coming in.

8) If a team wins in an empty stadium, did it really happen?
