SDSU Details Plans for New $250 Million Stadium

One day after San Diego State University detailed its plan to expand into Mission Valley, the athletic department Thursday unveiled a proposed design for the $250 million stadium portion of the project.

---

The 35,000-seat Aztec Stadium is included in the first phase of development and would take two years to build, JMI Realty CEO John Kratzer said.

---

One of the garden room areas will be dedicated to students who attend games, with food and beverages geared more toward their tastes and priced to meet their budget, according to Wicker.

“Our goal is to create a great experience for our students, and we realize that just providing some seats does not meet that need,” he said. “We’ll work with our student leaders on campus to build out an area that they can truly call their own.”

just dumb, do they not realize they could just take over Qualcom Stadium since the Chargers do not need it anymore.

Knocking down as part of a 2 Billion dollar expansion to the main campus.

San Diego didn't support the Chargers, neither does LA, so I will believe it when I see it.

this was originally meant to be tied in and shared with San Diego's MLS-expansion bid. San Diego won't be getting a club this go around, but it may during the next selection process...likely done in a year or two*

all this goes out the window of course if USSF stops playing daddy for MLS and allows some actual competition for top-tier status outside the closed league MLS, eventually forcing some semblance of the promotion/relegation that is so desperately needed (whence the leagues and clubs are stable)...but that's a whole other can of worms

35,000 seats for the low low price of $250M.  Ouch.

That's a lot of money for 35K seats.  Seems like Colorado State's new stadium seats 41,200 and cost less.

Did not realize Qualcomm was 50 yrs old. If City can do similar growth as they did with Petco it could be a very nice pedestrian friendly area, especially with Light Rail going past the site.

I'm amazed it stayed Qualcomm.

I remember going to a Padres game there in 1974 while visiting relatives in La Jolla.

Can the other 49 states vote to remove California from the union?

The dollar amount is insane but I DO like the idea of tailoring the student section with concessions and amentities within their budget and in ways that would attract them out.  We have to grab these kids attention so they’ll be loyal program contributors for years to come and that’s a great way to do it.  (But it damn sure don’t take $250M to achieve)

SDSU is pushing hard to be in the conversation for the next realignment (when UT/OU bolt). Also why CSU built up their stadium, and Fresno is trying to get a reno done to Bulldog Stadium.

California is a microcosm of what America COULD be like in 30-40 years.
