I hope the players get to go somewhere that they want to go, regardless of the opponent.  If they want to go to New Orleans, and they are given that option, then I say go for it.  They deserve it.

It really needs to be just as much about fan experience and the overall best interest of the program than about the player experience. That may not be a popular opinion, but beating South Alabama in New Orleans may be more fun for the players but having a chance at a P5 school in Dallas or Shreveport (whether that's actually a possibility, who knows) is way better for the program.

I am confident that's ultimately how we will approach the lobbying. Just trying to get the players a good vacation would be very Old Denton without the rest of the picture taken into account.

And for the record I definitely want the players to have a great time. They deserve it. We just need to fight for an opportunity to make the biggest statement possible with this team.

At first glance I'd say there is no way the players would choose Dallas as any kind of experience.

But for a chance to beat any of the bastards who didn't think they were good enough coming out of high school.......yeah, that's the bowl they'd want. .  So there you go.

Rick

Yeah.

I think some of y’all aren’t giving the guys enough credit.  Sure, the things to do outside of the game are factors, but I believe these guys want to beat the best.

I bet you they’d be very happy to take on a TX team in the Cotton Bowl to display their shoulder chips, probably moreso than going to Disney/Universal if they went to the Cure Bowl.

Im hearing our 1st choice is playing a P5 Texas team.  2nd Choice is New Orleans

Not going to lie, going back to New Orleans would be a blast.  A lot of fond UNT memories we have had there.

The problem with it is we could compete against a P5 team elsewhere or play some Sunbelt team in NO. I'd even rather get an AAC team than Sunbelt. I don't think I'd travel to NO to see us play a Sunbelt team. That would be a let down after an awesome season. Just feels like a step in the wrong direction.

Plus, the payout is $500k for NO compared to 1.2 million for HOD.

Of course it is, and i'm sure it has been from the start.

Yep and I don’t think anybody’s really arguing against that approach. While I think NO would be an ideal out of market bowl trip for the team, fans and students, I would never prioritize it over a matchup against Texas Tech, UT or KState.

What lots of people seem to be missing is that while we may want a P5 matchup, it doesn’t mean it’s likely to be available. There are more Bowl teams than slots this year, so it’s likely that the ESPN led horse trading will result more P5 vs P5 matchups at the expense of G5 vs P5 opportunities.

I get it if the players don't want to go to the Cotton Bowl again but I hope they realize attendance will be hurt if they play in a game on December 16.

Don't get me wrong, I do believe the players have earned the right to play where they want to play.

The payout is irrelevant, that money doesn't go directly to the school it goes directly to the conference and it is split amongst CUSA teams:

CUSA:

Bowl participants will retain the first $100,000 of revenue for bowl game tickets sold by the participating institutions. Participating institutions will split 50-50 with the Conference any ticket revenue over $100,000 for bowl game tickets sold by the participating institutions. After expenses, any surplus tickets and bowl revenues will be shared as follows: 10% to bowl participants (equal shares) and 90% to all members (equal shares) including bowl participants. Distributions are made on or after, June 15th but no later than June 30th of each year.

Overall bowl payouts are almost the same for 75% of the bowls.  What differs is the ticket allotment & gate revenue share vs direct payment options.

I believe the Independence Bowl has a higher overall bowl payout than the other CUSA bowls, but also has a larger ticket block that must be bought by the team.

It makes sense that the CUSA champ would want the Independence Bowl.

It isn't irrelevant. Splitting more than a million is better than splitting 400-500k. This conference needs all the money it can get.

Well sure, if HOD says they will take a CUSA team ONLY if its UNT, then that would be a consideration for the conference, but that is highly unlikely.  If HOD is willing to take a CUSA team - highly unlikely this year given the P5 bowl eligible teams - then I am sure the conference will work it out so a CUSA goes there, be it UNT or someone else.
