Logistic, communication, transportation, flight, and medical officers have Soldiers as well. Just like Infantry, Field Artillery and Armor officers. They may not be combat arms, but they still have Soldiers. In Afghanistan or even in Iraq, when they had to put CLPs on the road, they were not led by Infantry and Armor officers most of the time. They were led by Log and Tran officers. So, just because the are Combat Support or Combat Service Support officers doesn't mean they don't have Soldiers. Sure they can find a way to hide him away, but he has to screw up first. I would hate for his first screw up to cost lives because of no discipline.

I think you missed what I was saying.

The paintbrush cliche for these service academies by the genpop is that all these guys playing for Air Force, Navy, and Army are going to be Rambo'ing it up like Chesty Puller in just a few short years. And the reality is, many of them will not step foot in an infantry unit or a unit in direct support of an infantry unit. Yes, they will have enlisted personnel under their charge, but none of them will be in harms way. They will spend their days dealing with paper cuts and ankle sprains. Tracking limited duty soldiers trying to play hooky and trying to track down AWOL soldiers, etc.

I did miss what you were saying. My apologies. You are right they will not all be Combat Arms officers. However, I would say that West Pointers have a better chance of getting the branch they want than ROTC grads. Let's hope he doesn't get combat arms.

In this interview, he specifically says that he "definitely" wants to go into combat arms.

There we have it. Well, hopefully he doesn't get a weak Platoon Sergeant that he can push over. I always pulled my Platoon Leaders aside and got their heads right. Hopefully someone will do the same to him. I ended up having great PLs because they listened. As a matter of fact, I always had great Platoon Leaders and Commanders except one. That one wouldn't listen to me when I was his First Sergeant and he was the Commander so I let him fail and he was relieved of his command and forced out to recruiting. Recruiting is a death sentence for Infantry officers and that's just what it was for him. Like my Mama used to say "Hard head makes a soft butt."
