I get it people want to downplay DD’s SBC run due to his OOC record. I think the point some are trying to make is that DD wasn’t given a chance to succeed OOC. He was smack dab in the middle of some nasty Body Bag scheduling. Just imagine SL and this squad opening with Clemson and then having to play OU the next week. That’s tough on your staff & team. How does that look to recruits when they see the score 65-7 several times on a schedule every year?

That's more or less my opinion.  He didn't walk on water, he had a lot of faults.  But he accomplished a whole lot with what he had.

Oh yeah, DD’s time had surely come. It was time to move the program in another direction. The Teflon Todd debacle is another kick to the nuts, but that’s another story....

You mean we hadn’t won much at the D1A level in the 3 years before Dickey arrived or the decade and a half before that where we weren’t even playing D1A football?

Both, because during Hayden Fry's run their schedule were loaded with schools that still don't play FBS football today.  Many of them dropped football altogether like UT Arlington.  Fry had an admirable record but it wasn't like they beat a lot of well known well respected teams during that run.  Here a list of Fry's Mean Green best victories at a passive glance (it not like I was around then)

1974 Record 2-7-2 Best Victory against San Diego State ranked 20

1975 Record 7-2 Best Victory against Tennessee

1976 Record 6-5 Best Victory...? Hard to pick La Tech, New Mexico St, (only 2 in FBS today)

1977 Record 9-2 Best Victory- take your pick from members of CUSA West Division today or Memphis

1978 Record 9-2 Best Victory Oklahoma State

If you take out victories against non-FBS opponents today Fry's record look solid but not great.  We just have never won a lot here regardless of FCS or FBS level.

It was both. If what you said were the case alone, he would have won more out of conference during that span.

If you're making an argument that a particular number matters, but you don't know that number, it certainly hurts the foundation of your argument. Arky State's record in that particular conference certainly relates as it compares to DD's.

You are just being completely ridiculous at this point.

USF, Troy, CSU, TCU, Arizona, Air Force, Memphis, ULL, Baylor, La Tech, Southern Miss, Akron, etc. DD had plenty of opportunities against middle-of-the-road programs and bottom feeder P5s. This idea that all we did was play top 10 programs outside of the SBC is simply selective memory. I didn't get pissed when we laid an egg vs UT and OU and Alabama. I got pissed when we did it vs these teams.  And plenty of the rest of us did at the time.

If it was all skill, and not the level of competition, then he simply wouldn't have performed as poorly OOC as he did.

If you want to argue that "Nobody has done it", because you're specifically fixated on a number (27-0) enough to say that 44-7 isn't the same or 24-4 isn't the same or any amount of dominance over time that plenty of coaches have accomplished (only to move the goalposts about why those don't count), then you need to at least make sure your number is correct. If someone went 50-1, with a loss in the middle, you'd say "yeah, but they never went 26-0." That's what's ridiculous.

During all but one year of Frys Time UNT was independent so but if you want to go there you have to look at the 2-7-2.  The hate for DD given the lack of accomplishment at this program since Odus Mitchell was coaching is ridiculous.

Look, let’s celebrate Coach Dickey’s accomplishments and those of some of his teams this weekend like we should.

However, there will forever be debates over whether a few good seasons make a great coach or not. Turner Gill would be a good example of the quarrel in that question.
