What if you told your manager that you're happy with your job but a personal issue was causing a need to consider looking for a job in another city? You didn't quit but simply notified him that you were looking. If the personal issue worked itself out, would you still quit because you already said you were looking? Doubtful.
Suppose his girlfriend graduated and was going to move to Houston (or wherever) for a job and he tossed his name in the TP to see if there was any chance of transferring to a school closer to her? Once there were no offers to allow him to move closer, then he backed out.
