So I'm simply not football smart enough to identify what happened last night.

We came out in the first quarter just absolutely sucking, then dominated the last three quarters of the game.

What changes did the coaching staff make to accomplish this?

For one, USM's defense started the game by living in our backfield.  We hit a few plays and they backed off a bit.

Actually I think Wilson is what made them be less aggressive.  They were sending people and using schemes every single play, run or pass.  Then Wilson hit them with that that long run.  Wilson is a great back because he knows the original play and how it develops, then has the vision and smarts to see how the pressure is changing the lanes, then has the patience to wait for the new lane, make one great cut, and hit the jets.

At that point, they got a little less aggressive with the pressure.  That gave Fine time to fine Guyton, short at first.  At the start their dbs were playing well off him.  Once that started working they played closer and he ran past them over and over.  Fine has the touch on the deep ball to hit him often enough.  Probably the best deep ball I have ever seen from a North Texas QB.

At that point if USM was agressive they could get hurt by Wilson, if they weren't Fine would kill them.  They still were to successful sending pressure.  The pressure failed only because either Wilson saw it and made a great cut, or made someone miss, or Fine was able to run for his life and hit a man.  Prime example of that is Fine hitting Kelvin Smith on the 4th down play when there was a complete jail break in front of him.

If the Offense can just get a little more consistent (sometimes they did a great job) on containing that pressure, this is a conference championship contending team.  If they can't, we'll be up and down all year.

Good post, but IMO, I'd like to see a bit more consistency from the DB's more than anything.  For me, that's much more critical.  I agree that Wilson is a special back.

In the 2013 season, you had a good QB, a very good receiver, and a great back.  2017 team has a good QB, a very good receiver, and a great back.  No coincidence UNT offense is playing well.  I need to see a little more from the defense before I pronounce this team a championship contender, but yeah, signs are encouraging.  Want to see how next game goes for sure.

We stopped turning the ball over.

If North Texas has the ball, Fine, Guyton, and Wilson are coming after you like a spider monkey.

No turnovers the first two drives, and we had -3 total yards after those.  Then Wilson hit on a long run.

First couple of drives were self-defeating. Run game wasn’t working just yet but also there was one mishandled snap and one sack in the first six plays.

Better execution of what was there and also some minor adjustments here and there.
