Why not?

conservative run first system, draw left draw right. Maybe an occasional pass to the sidelines until we had a defense gassed then we would open it up more.

I’m not convinced.

Halls long ball placement and timing seemed better, IMO. can’t wait to see how Fine continues to develop

Fine is a better passer and faster, Hall was a outstanding field commander.

What is the season record for a  QB total passing yards at UNT?

Top 10 Single Season Passing Yards:

1. Mitch Maher, 1994 3,103
2. Derek Thompson, 2013 2,896
3. Steve Ramsey, 1969 2,828
4. Giovanni Vizza, 2008 2,758
5. Derek Thompson, 2012 2,649
6. Mitch Maher, 1993 2,595
7. Steve Ramsey, 1968 2,516
8. Scott Davis, 1988 2,409
9. Giovanni Vizza, 2007 2,388
10. Mitch Maher, 1992 2,090

Mason Fine currently sits at 1,442 yards five games into the season. Getting into the Top 10 is very doable for him if he stays healthy.

For grins and giggles, here is the All Time Passing Yards Top 10:

1. Mitch Maher, 1991-94 8,519
2. Derek Thompson, 2009-13 7,447
3. Steve Ramsey, 1967-69 7,076
4. Scott Davis, 1987-90 6,923
5. Scott Hall, 2000-04 5,975
6. Giovanni Vizza, 2007-08 5,146
7. Jason Mills, 1994-97 3,981
8. Vidal Carlin, 1965-66 3,233
9. Riley Dodge, 2008-10 3,187
10. Ken Washington, 1974-77 3,040

Mason Fine currently has 3,014 yards all time. He should move into the top 10 against UTSA. Who really knows where he will finish after this year but he is averaging just shy of 300 ypg right now.

If he maintains his average of about 300/game, he'll finish a 12 game season with 3,600 yds. Add that to his 1,572 yds he got his freshman season, that would give him about 5,100 for his young career putting him at 7th place just below Giovanni Vizza.

Again, if he stays healthy for here on out, 10,000+ yards is well within the realm of happening.

Much more than just a top 10 spot....  It looks like he is on pace to getting to the number 1 spot.

Fine will break both single season record and all time record.  May do it by the end of his JR year.  And he wasn't afforded a RS Year think about that.

I get the different systems, so comparing their numbers is ridiculous.

I agree with your second assessment that Fine is a better passer and faster while Hall was a great leader.  Just on natural ability, the edge has to go to Fine.  Leadership, intangibles, etc...currently go to Hall with Fine closing quickly.  My comparison is in ability alone, minus the system they ran/run.

FWIW, Scott Hall's pure arm strength was better than Fine's, but Fine is a better pure passer. Fine is used to throwing (accurately) the ball around from just about any situation... in the pocket, or rolling out. Scott Hall had offers from other D-1 schools to play safety, so he was probably a better pure athlete than Fine. He was also more durable than Fine.

If I were going to compare Fine to any previous outstanding NT QB, I'd choose Mitch Maher. Like Fine, Maher could throw accurately from any situation. Their arm strength was about the same. But like Hall, Maher was more durable than Fine.

And now the other factor that (IMHO) is just as important as the issue of who has a stronger/more accurate arm or more mobile......the receivers. Once again, IMHO Fine has a much better selection of receivers than just about any of the other QB's on the list. Fine has receivers who are very good at running routes, like Lawrence, Smiley, Bussy, Pertile, and receivers who are tall and good at going after the ball like Guyton, Q. Jackson (#13), Kevin Smith,  Chumley and White (#14). Plus, all of the RB's are threats as receivers.

To me, the truly great QB's are the ones who set records without having NFL-like receivers at their disposal.....like Maher. Here are the leading receivers each year that Maher was at North Texas.

                                 recv.  yrds  avge. Td's

1994 David Brown 66  1,013  15.3  11......this year Maher threw for 3103 yards. Brown got 1013 of them, so who got the rest? ....anyone remember?

1993 David Brown 45    497   11.0    7 .....this year Maher threw for 2595 and Brown got 497 of them.....so who got the rest?...anyone remember?

1992 Clayton George 36  563 15.6   2 ....this year Maher threw for 2090 yards and George got 563 of them.. so who got the rest? anyone remember?

1991 David Brown 45    531    11.8   1 ....this year Maher took over for Wendel Mosley who is listed as the passing leader @ 861 yards so Maher threw for less than 861, Brown got the majority of yards this year.

Fine has the potential to go down in UNT history. But half of the story will be the weapons that were made available to him.

Lots of love for Fine yesterday and today.   Much-deserved, and it's about time.

He's played well so far this season, and his decision-making has improved DRASTICALLY since last year, just like some around here predicted, going from true Freshman to Sophomore year.  He's only going to get better y'all.  The sky's the limit for this guy.
He's going to have some stinker games every once in a while, but overall, he's the perfect fit for this offensive scheme.

I will say, he's painful to listen to during interviews because it's coach-speak-cliche after coach-speak-cliche.  He sounds exactly like Harrell.

The ONLY statistic?
I guarantee you, if the Houston game was played, that number/ranking would be much different.  No doubt, their defense is good, but NT has been tested against 2 pretty good defenses so far this year (Iowa & USM).  We'll see if UTSA's offense can do the same thing we did to USM's defense.
Anyone know if that game will be televised anywhere?

EDIT:  I can also guarantee you we will not be held to 207yds total offense.

USM had a top 10 defense (statistically speaking) as well. Something to keep in mind is that UTSA has played one fewer game which affects their cumulative numbers. Houston runs a similar offense to ours and so those stats aren't reflected since the game was canceled. Baylor is a horrible team this year, especially on defense and UTSA only scored 17 points in that game. Of course UTSA beat down an FCS team at home. Texas State is another horrible offensive team. USM will be their first real test of the season.  That game will tell everyone what their defense is really made of prior to playing us.

UTSA has a good defense but I don't think it is that good.

I'd be more worried about our defense versus their offense.

Stadium on Facebook is what I have found. I think this will be the actual link to the video feed.

No, probably "Run Defense" more than anything else.

They are 9th.  We are at 40th, which is way better than I thought we were at.

But for me I always keep in mind that Defense wins the day.  You must Run the ball, you must stop the run and you must play solid special teams in order to win a championship.

I remember Tom Cable's Idaho teams of the early 2000's.  Always a top 10 offense.  Their fans went on and on and on every year how they were gonna kick our ass.  Problem for them was Dickey had a top 10 defense and a massive steam roller ground game to back it up and we shut them down every time.

Kind of lost in the offensive outburst is the performance of Trevor Moore. Currently tied for 10th in country with 9 FG's made.. has been nothing but clutch so far

Would probably have been special team player of week, if he had not won last week.
