I think this is what they probably should have done from the start with these FCS opponents. It isn't worth the regular price of admittance for a subpar opponent. Its actually no different than what the bodybag opponent does to us when we play at their giant stadiums.

This is the second flash sale they've had. They really are pushing to improve attendance/ticket sales, which is a breath of fresh air.

It's a breath of fresh air that they're trying new things, yes. It's also concerning that they're dropping face value of 33% of our home games in half. It's kind of telling of what the current situation is to be honest. And if the situation is what I am anticipating it as, this should have been done much sooner than 4 days before the opener.

Of course they are, how else is The Wren™ going to get that next big job without increasing sales?  BTW I am not complaining, that is exactly the attitude we need from leadership right now.  Nowhere to go but up.

Interesting strategy from Wren. I wonder if they will move to further incentivize season tickets and MGC to offset these flash sales. The eclipse sale offered a huge savings over the normal season ticket price.

There is a significant cost to promotions like this.   The simplistic view is that it adds extra fans and money to the program for seats that are not going to be sold.   The other side is that fans that take advantage of this promotions were going to buy tickets anyway.

I frankly doubt it is going to add many new fans and if it continues there will be more and more fans opting out of  full-priced tickets

Offering the 50% now and limiting it is why is done now, and not earlier in the summer when people are willing buy season tickets and pay the full-price... You are just getting to get butts in seats.. A empty seat will never buy popcorn, soda, beer, etc... just getting 1 person in is worth it... Cost them 0 bucks to email/tweet/etc...

Yes it sucks for the fans that have paid the full-price, etc. but again its about getting butts in the seats...

Supply and demand, y'all.

Yep.

And, as many of us have argued for years:  empty seats don't buy concessions or souvenirs either.

The other regime listened to consultants, who told them you have to price it at a certain level to show the value of it.  That kind of sh*t goes on daily in the marketing world.  And, it may work for some products - namely, products people want.  That's why things like cell phones, which cost roughly $30-40 to assemble overseas, sell for hundreds of dollars here.

But, when you have a product people do not want, you have to give them a sample.  There is a reason brands hire people to stand in grocery stores and hand out free samples of their product.  Not everything sells itself.  And, for some products, like the one we have with North Texas football, there is a long negative drag on it in the public's perception from decades of losing...and, losing after voluntarily slipping out of sight for over a decade.

We on this board don't have to be sold on UNT football.  We've been suffering through it voluntarily since (1990, here...you fill in the blank for you).

Other point many of us have made over the years is:  why are you sneering at the "t-shirt fans" of schools like Texas, Oklahoma, Alabama, etc.?  They are making those schools millions of dollars!

Maybe...maybe...we finally have an athletic department that will listen to consultants, then say, "Yeah, well, that all looks good on paper and makes for a swell power point presentation, but...the truth is, we need to get butts in these f*cking seats, okay?  Let's teach 'em how to drive before we try to sell them the Cadillac."

For f*ck sake...if we had just 5,000 "t-shirt fans" in the area who would show up games?  That would do wonders.

It's about more than getting butts in seats.  It's about trying to win repeat customers/building loyalty.  You want the butts to come back to the seatsseveral times a year.  Then, be interested enough to maybe put their butts in the Super Pit seats during basketball season.

And, here is where many of us will chime with obvious things like...can't we get some friendlier ushers?  Can we have the band race out with some exuberance and pizzazz like they do at OU, Ohio State, and other like-minded schools?  The kind of sh*t smaller minds here pooh-pooh, but that they eat up at "bigger, traditional" programs.

(SIDE NOTE: Show the band some respect and get them new uniforms as well.)

It all means something.  If people just get a ticket...arrive, are hassled by ushers, see no enthusiasm even from the school's own marching band, watch them team get its ass kicked for the umpteenth time in a row by some other no name school?  There is no incentive to return.

So, it's not just getting a butt in the seat for a game.  That's just the genesis of what the department should hope will become a loyal, repeat customer.  But, you have to give people some reason to want to return.

It would have been cool to advertise donating a large percentage of the ticket sales to Harvey Disaster Relief instead of just making them 50% off. Get people in seats for a good cause.

Or give some of the evacuees free tickets and food, then bus them over. Try to get their minds off the bad.

so i sent this link around the office and have had 3 people message me back saying they are coming to the game.  1 is a U of H grad, 1 is a UTEP grad, and the other is a UTA grad.  So, i happen to think this is a good thing.  Thats 3 people that normally would not have come to the game.

In my YUGE data sample of one, when I bought my first ticket to my first game, I had no intention of becoming a season ticket holder.

I had a student ID at the time, so my ticket was free, but I went to buy a ticket for my daughter so I could bring her along.

They charged me MORE than the stated price for the ticket.  I asked why..."Well, we thought that more people would be interested in coming to see Tulsa, so we're charging more for this game."

At the time, money was tight.  Real tight.  So tight that I had to drink beer cheaper than what @THOR drinks.  Paying extra for that ticket was kinda hard on me.

If I hadn't weaseled my way into free admission for the kid that year, I would likely never have returned, and would most certainly not be a season ticket holder today,  and would probably not ever go to Denton, and would never have known of UNT opportunities for my kid that she now takes advantage of.

Get people in the seats.  Maybe some of them get hooked.  Even a 5% success rate would be worth the long-term returns.

Why does the band need new(-er) uniforms? They got new ones a few years ago.
