Is it just me or does it seem like we have a pretty good number of freshmen on the 2 deep?

Fulp and Krasniqi are the only true freshman on there, the others are redshirted

You're reaching...they're not even on similar planets to Shanbour

Here is where I see similarities between all of the players mentioned. IMHO, all of the athletes mentioned were overlooked/under assessed by college staff.

Now I know less about Baker Mayfields situation than the others. But after doing some brief research about him, what strikes me about Mayfield is "how in hell did a QB who had two year stats like his at Lake Travis (6200 yrds, 67tds, 8 Ints, 25-2 record and one state championship) have to walk-on at Texas Tech"?

Casey Fitzgerald walked on during the DD period. I could see him being initially overlooked because most of his HS athletic career was in Basketball. However, athletic talent such as his should have been recognized by a competent coach, and he should have been out on the field during the DD era. It took a coaching change, and fresh eyes, before he was given the opportunity to contribute to the program..... and the rest is North Texas statistical history. I still don't understand how the pros overlooked him.

Shanbour started out with a ship offer from Colorado( does that count as being a higher profile recruit?). That went away after the Colorado coach was fired, so he moved on to Oklahoma St. where he was invited to participate as a preferred walk-on. Turf toe caused him to be out of the competition, so he moved on to North Texas. I don't know who invited him to walk-on, but arriving with turf toe once again put him at the bottom of the QB list. I don't know if Mac/Canales regarded him as not very durable (and thus not a candidate to run a run-first offense) because of his turf toe, but it looks like, (once again) fresh eyes have changed the situation of another North Texas player.
