Hill is where it's at for the current students. That said, don't be afraid to roam into the Red/Blue lot and visit. As @Ben Gooding said, everyone is friendly and shares beer/food. You'll see that some of us out of touch olds still know how to party.

As a new comer to tailgating (started in 2015...), here are some things I've learned over the past few years:

  • Bring some help. It's difficult to set up/take down a canopy tent by yourself.
  • Bring some beer. Even if you label your event "BYOB", your friends are going to take some of your beer. Just buy a 12-pack of whatever-light and know that it'll go to a good home.
  • Try to outsource some of the fun and games... People always ask me, "What can I bring?", and ocassionally, I'd let them bring some things like water, ice, paper plates, etc. Try to go bigger, getting them more involved. Ask them to bring a Corn Hole set, or a football or frisbee to toss around.
  • Bring chairs. After a couple of beers, everyone wants to sit, but nobody thinks to bring their own chair. I bring about 4-5 with me every tailgate... Academy has $5 chairs right now that are OKAY quality. You can spend more if you want, but at the end of the day, they're only going to be used a few times per year.
  • Get their somewhat early, but don't expect everyone else to. For a 6pm kick off, I'll get to The Hill around noon. However, most people don't show up until 1-3 hours prior to kickoff. I wish more people showed up earlier, but that's just the way it is...
  • BBQ chicken legs and roasted corn are a great cheap food for tailgating that everyone loves

Good luck and have fun! We need more tailgaters out here!

But if I buy a 12 pack, how will I have extra beers for my friends?

Newbie Here,

Wanting to come out and tailgate with some friends/alumni for a few games this year. Definitely the Home Opener against Lamar. How does one get a parking pass to tailgate in the Red/Blue lots. Do you have to be a Season Ticket holder? Thanks for the advice and Go Mean Green!

For the ambitious go straight for the Friday night camp out.  Hook up a tv watch the Friday night mountain west game, stay up late, sit around fire pit and freshen up in the stadium restrooms by the ticket office.  It's good bonding time.

for the first timers, i would say chairs, beer and watching the weather are the most important factors... we started tailgating in 2009 during the monsoon against Ohio. we were totally unprepared and realized how much we didnt have... as we grew our tailgate, we slowly acquired items over the years that made our outfit a lot better.

Just make sure you have a good group of friends who want to drink and talk NT football

My Friday night camping days are over, but man, I wish I'd have thought to check the stadium restrooms back when I was doing it!
