Andy Flusche Named To Wuerffel Award Watch List

Senior Defensive Lineman Recognized For Athletic, Academic, Community Achievement

FORT WALTON BEACH, Florida – North Texas redshirt senior defensive lineman Andy Flusche was named to the Wuerffel Trophy preseason watch list Tuesday, the All Sports Association announced. Flusche is one of 108 student-athletes vying for the coveted award.

Flusche, recently honored along with six other Texas collegiate scholar-athletes by The National Football Foundation (NFF) Gridiron Club of Dallas Chapter, boasts a 3.27 grade-point-average with numerous Dean’s List appearances and is the first North Texas football player to graduate with an allied health kinesiology degree. He is also now pursuing a degree in criminal justice.

A tremendous student, the Muenster, Texas, native is also a key fixture along the Mean Green’s defensive line. Flusche played in all 13 games for North Texas last season, including the Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl. He totaled 17 tackles from his defensive end spot, and posted a season-high three stops at Rice in September in a double overtime win for the Mean Green. Throughout his career in Denton, Flusche has made 31 appearances, posting 45 total tackles and two-and-a-half sacks.

In addition to his success in the classroom, as well as on the field, Flusche is also a huge part of the Denton community. He is involved with several community outreach activities through the North Texas football program. He routinely visits local elementary schools to read to students, has worked with Salvation Army and the Denton Food pantry to help provide food and other goods to those in need and captained the softball team that plays the Robson Ranch community team each spring.

Flusche’s work in the classroom and off the field demonstrates what a student-athlete at North Texas truly embodies.

The Wuerffel Trophy, named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the Football Bowl Subdivision player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement.

Voting for the Wuerffel Trophy is performed by a National Selection Committee that includes college football television and print media, industry notables, former head coaches and prior Wuerffel Trophy recipients.

Semifinalists for the award will be announced on Nov. 2 and finalists will be announced on November 22.

The formal announcement of the 2017 recipient will be made at the National Football Foundation’s press conference in New York City on December 5.

The Mean Green kick off the 2017 season on Saturday, Sept. 2 at home against Lamar. Season tickets are on sale now and fans can purchase tickets through the Mean Green athletics ticket office. I was not aware of the Wuerffel trophy before now.   Kindof akin to the NFL's man of the year award.   I'd love to see Andy win this, and I'm an even bigger fan of his now after learning all of his accolades off the field.  What an outstanding young man!

When I coached at Honey Grove HS, we went to a track meet at Valley View HS one year. Andy F ran on Muenster's 4x1, 4x2 and threw the hell out of the shot and disc. Talk about a talented 1a squad (2a now). They also had Cole Waltershied who starts at DE for Okie State
