Growing up Green

Despite being born in Austin, Jerod is as true a Dentonite as there ever was, with many of his childhood memories being formed around the UNT campus. He remembers watching Fourth of July fireworks outside his father’s office in Chilton Hall every summer, followed by autumn Saturdays at Fouts Field cheering on the Mean Green.

“We’d always have season tickets to football, so I grew up going to games at Fouts Field in the days when they would throw tortillas on the field and all that,” says Jerod. “It was a good time growing up in this community, for sure.”

Athletics have always played a big role in the Fritsch family. Cheryl was an All-Southland Conference softball player at Sam Houston State, where the couple met, and although Eric’s basketball career ended in high school, he’s always been a passionate football fan, admitting he even tunes in to the Tuesday night college games that “probably nobody else watches.”

So it should be no surprise that Jerod developed a love for football as well, going on to play for the Guyer High School football team that won back-to-back Texas Class 4A State Championships in 2012 and 2013, finishing with a combined record of 30-3 through his two varsity seasons. And as an all-district and all-area first-team selection at 6-foot-5-inches tall and 250 pounds, Jerod had plenty of collegiate options to choose from.

My guess is this kid will bring 10-20 local fans to every game.  We need more of these.  Glad to have him and his family on board.

We didn't recruit him. He walked on

How does this mean we should expect his presence to gain more fans?  This doesn't make any sense.   According to the article, it sounds like his mom/dad already attend games.   Who all else is coming because of him?

Glad he found a spot here, but I don't get the idea of this guy bringing extra fans because he's on the roster.

Maybe I "quoted" the "wrong guy".  Maybe I "misunderstood your comment" as a "defense" of "Harry's position".

No I was just pointing out that he is a walk-on and that we are not actively recruiting anyone so they can potentially bring fans into the stadium

I get that. No matter how they get here, local kids don't improve attendance.

they don't?  didn't know that plenty of fans/family from oklahoma/louisiana/california/arizona fly into north texas every home game to watch their kid play...

The best part of all of this is that even if he starts there's no need to hand him a scholarship. It's likely his Dad's position allows for his tuition to be free or steeply discounted. I know he may want the recognition for earning a scholarship, but this is a win to keep him off one. Interesting situation, I hope he contributes.

I didn't know Arizona was considered "local."

The original point was that we should get more local players here to get more people to the game. It's never worked. I'm not saying family/friends don't attend games, I'm saying using recruiting as an attendance strategy is ludicrous. Get the best players we can. I don't care if that's Guyer or Permian or Yates.

Been following for 23 years and I can't even think of a player that's impacted attendance. Probably because we've never had a game-changer at quarterback. The only person I can say may have brought in people as a curiousity was T Dodge and look how that worked out.

I do remember Spencer Stack's first start. I think there was 5k there.
