The way I see it, if Gage goes elsewhere, we'll pick up a WR from Po-Dunk, Oklahoma that magically nobody has ever heard of other than South By NorthEast New York PolyTech State and will propel us to heights we could only dream of!

Casual tape observation: Brown looks like he has good size, good footwork and is aggressive. Looks like he could help us to me.

Higher expectations.

The last few weeks I feel like UNT90. Am I turning into the crabby old man of the board? Time will tell

It would be more encouraging if he was showing the speed and athleticism in his film and was already in the 285 lbs range, but then again if he was already at that size he would be much more highly rated.

He looks athletic and looks like he has potential.  However, we are betting a lot on potential.  At least he has an entire year and a half to fill out and get stronger.  Welcome aboard!

I think one of the areas not being discussed enough is the timing of these commitments. I agree, that at the end of the recruiting single-offer kids looks bad. I think that these offers are early and intentional. The coaches aren't filling a hole last minute, these are offers they put out well in advance.

Maybe, but Mccarney's staff was doing the same thing. Look how many of those guys we took before their senior seasons had started back in 2012 and 2013:

Rod Lancaster

Those are the upperclassmen (or would have been) of a 1-11 team. Identifying your guys is good. I'm scared of Littrell and co over relying on their scouting abilities and those abilities being contradictorily better than those of their peers. NFL GMs and college coaches who put too much faith that they are the "smartest guy in the room" usually pay the price.

To me you have find guys that can fit our type of offense. UNT has taken risks on guys like Cody Haynes that never made it to campus.

It is hard to find highly ranked OL that will come to come UNT because of # of options that higher ranked kids have. P5 schools stock up on quality and highly ranked OL every, look at schools like WISC, Bama, UT from the past, USC.

UNT has to find kids that can develop into players for them. If it means taken kids that have to sit for 1 or 2 years then play you have to do it. Adding guys like Newman, and Moses(the HS G) on top of the kid from Segin and Brammer have all solid traits with them having quick feet or just brute strength to dominate kids in HS

Brown has the height and body it looks like to fill out, and has the feet. Yes the lower the ranking the more risk, but UNT has also develop these guys. We have to hope that the new OL Coach is someone who has the ability to coach up kids and help them develop. If he can do that, then getting lower kids will be fine.

While Mr Wilson over at UTSA piles up 20 3 star recruits a class and runs over the conference for the next two years to a cushy P5 job

He now has a 247 profile. Rated as a .7499.

Using 2017 as a reference:

Higher than: Jevin Pahinui

Lower than: Other OL.

IMO: He has good film and should be able to contribute after a RS season and putting on some weight/filling out. Big fan of the height, afraid of what the weight issue could do. Regardless, glad to bring in a new member to the Mean Green Family.

Welcome Cole :).

Probably because we're the only one actively recruiting the kid

Or, he could be like a number of other kids that we have offered this year that end up receiving a number of other offers after us. This young man was first team all district in a strong district that includes The Woodlands, Lufkin, etc...  We have had a few OL recruits in the past that weren't heavily recruited that turned out to be pretty good over their careers. Let's welcome this young man and see how he develops.

I cannot seem to remember a year where  so many people were  so negative. So many seem to put down the athletic director. So many seem to dislike the coach. So many seem negative against any recruiters that seem to commit to us.  Too bad we can't try and enjoy the off-season and be optimistic for the coming season.

My issue isn't with Wren Baker or Coach Littrell. I think we as a fan base we have accepted mediocrity for so long that we get excited for any kid that chooses UNT. I'm just of the mindset that you can't outscheme quality players. I get a bit wary of our self-evaluations when seemingly little to no other schools seem to agree on what our staff sees, especially those that run a similar scheme as us.

If we're getting guys that fit our system, all of our offensive commits would have LaTech/Texas Tech/Washington State/Insert Air Raid team here offers. That doesn't seem to be the case often and it worries me.

That being said, for all the negativity I've expressed, welcome Mr. Brown. I hope you work your ass off and become an all conference lineman for us

It's not about the recruit.   He's obviously a project that could pay off.   I'm all for those guys.  You never know where the next Brelan Chancellor will come from.

My issue is with our class already being hamstrung by McCarney, and Littrell already having 5 or 6 players grayshirting this year.   That's already almost 1/4 of our class.   Do we have much room to gamble on the 'project' guys?

How is our class "hamstrung" by gray/blue shirting players in an effort to get our numbers back up to D1 levels?  Honest question, as I don't see how this is a negative.  I trust that men like Littrell and his staff know how to manage their recruiting classes much better than I, and do so with the understanding that the success/failure of these classes equates to the success/failure of their coaching tenure.

There is a cap of 25 scholarships to hand out PER YEAR.    Grayshirting 5-6 guys in the 2017 class to count towards the 2018 class already puts us 5-6 scholarships in.
Compound that with the issue McCarney put us in where we only have 19-or-so scholarships available to us because he kept 'shipping walk-on guys, and now we really must be picky with who we offer.   I believe this latest round of NCAA rules changes talked about taking away "grayshirting" and over-signing.  I don't know if that part of it passed, but if so, we're really stuck.

Question about grayshirting:

What if a young man is "gray shirted" and doesn't pan out.  That doesn't count against the scholarship limit, or does it?

Are you saying that he is never put on scholarship?  Then no, he wouldn't.

But isn't Littrell doing more of this blueshirting thing than grayshirting?

Yes.

As far as I know, Joseph Ozougwu is the only guy Littrell has "Grayshirted"

He is Blueshirting a few guys a class though. Hence why we could only sign 20 this year, and probably 20 or so next year depending.

Not just Dan, but Dodge and Dickey as well, for the most part.

Agree, though, as many have that it's becoming clear that the recruiting hasn't turned yet.

We are 5 commits in to next year's signing class.  Wouldn't you agree that it is a little early to be making this determination?

If the quality of the five were different than in years past, yes.  But, that's not the case, so...no.

I think the commitment of Gage is single-hand a positive compared to previous classes, along with adding kids kids from very solid and well thought of HS programs is a positive.

Isn't that what Dodge did though? Recruit a bunch of kids from "Winning" programs because they knew how to win, and then lost damn near every game his entire time here? Not saying it's the same thing, but worth noting

You have to change the complete culture of the football program, and SL and the staff are doing that by bringing in kids that will challenge and compete every day. Adding kids from solid programs is good also because it develops a connection between the coaches and that school. It helps kids from thinking oh well UNT is my only offer lets go there to now UNT is an place I WANT to go too, and I think Dodge was in over his head with UNT because he didn't surround himself like SL has. SL has already been to a bowl game with a very very disappointing year according to the stats.

Adding players like Gage, Smith, White, Johnson, Siggers, Guyton give us talented kids. Not every kid that comes to UNT is going to have to have a huge/long offer list because of the lack of success, NFL Production, prestige, among other things. SL has to develop the kids that do come here so that he can change that. SL and that staff coached these kids up last year to a 4-win improvement.

That's right.  I'm getting my shirt colors confused.
Grayshirting is putting them on scholarship at the semester break and counting them to the next season's class.  Blueshirting is putting them on scholarship almost immediately following the beginning of the school year and counting them to the next season's class.
