My thoughts exactly, and while I some have had productive careers, overall this class should have received a  poor rating.

Failures:

Manu: how the coaching staff can recruit and sign a player only to find out he has no eligibility left is inexcusable.  Just a total waste and a failure by a lazy coaching staff.

Nelson: Left the program early

Williams: So much talent...

The class is full of contributors and players that had injury issues but nobody, outside of Jackson, that really became a standout.  Kidsy made a bad decision that really cost him and Smiley has probably exceeded expectations.

I think he'll continue to exceed them this upcoming year.

Thanks.  Excellent recap.  This is the only real way to evaluate a recruiting class - wait 4 years.

Technically, yes. But there are formulas in place that we talk about every recruiting cycle and they hold true just about every year, almost down to the individual player. The ranking system is not a fail safe and it has its flaws, but it's consistent and recruiting rankings and conference standings typically go hand in hand with one another over the years of classes.

Every year I can say that Alabama's recruiting class is top-notch, Vanderbilt's recruiting class is mediocre, and New Mexico State's recruiting class stinks - without even looking to see who each school signed.  What matters is what the members of each class do on the field, and for that you have to wait & see.

I'm more concerned about the overall production of a class rather than the individual production. And again, the rankings provided by 247Sports has shown to be accurate in dictating on the field performance based on the years to follow. I know we at UNT try to numb our brains to these facts because our recruiting is subpar, almost clock work esque. But they are just that, facts. I didn't create the metrics, the rankings, the post analysis of recruiting classes based on performance standards. But there are an abundance of articles and blogs with statistical analysis, even for lil ole CUSA. Classes in the top quartile of a conference finish in the top quartile of the conference standings. So forth and so on. We need to deal with it as a University rather than blubber the same tiresome excuses every year.

What matters is recruiting.

It's not coincidence that every year Alabama's results are top-notch, Vanderbilt's are mediocre, and NMSU's stink.

So what causes what?  Do winning programs lead tp great recruiting classes, or do great recruiting classes lead to winning?  Or are they, like the chicken & the egg, interrelated?  For UNT's sake I hope you're right.
