Benford's staff represented a decent size bump in budget over the previous staff and the new staff salaries should be higher than Benford's staff.  Even with increases, we are still pretty far behind some of the top budgets in our conference(over $1M behind the top budgets).

Note: data is from 15-16 season.

How the HELL do you spend $19 million on a basketball program?  Though I'm sure many here would aspire to compete with that.

You take helicopters to visit recruits.

The gap between us and top-tier CUSA spending is about 1 million.  Of note, the gap between the top 3 and the number 4/5 spots is 5-6 million.

I would be interested to know how much ticket sales impact our budget: for example, what did we get from last year's attendance vs. what we would get if we averaged 10K/game.

Additional thoughts, which I don't have time to research.  Somewhat inspired by Tasty's message on the recent pod:

  • What is the average budget at conferences with 1 bid? 2 bids? 3 bids, etc...?
  • Grouping the conferences by assumed NCAA bid counts, how many schools have a budget that clearly prioritizes an attempt to get a bid? How many schools within the same conferences have a budget that clearly implies "we don't prioritize this compared to our peers"?
  • Relative to the number of bids a conference may receive, can any observation be made about the percentage of schools attempting to get the bids?

Those are interesting questions. It's not a clean import into a database, and it's not coded by conference. So... Give me a few days.

Look at Grand Canyon up there at #93!  The WAC shall rise again! (Karl Benford's gettin' his dancing shoes shined as we speak!)

Wow!  I'm not sure where you were going with this oldguy.  I know that you've been beaten down with Benford the last five years but I believe that you are thinking about former WAC commissioner Karl Benson, who has been gone from the WAC for four years and is actually doing a decent job with the Sun Belt.

I believe that the WAC's new commissioner, Jeff Hurd, is responsible for Grand Canyon being in the WAC.  Now Hurd has also brought in some weirdies such as Denver and Chicago State, both a long way from the base.  Next thing you know the WAC will bring in the University of Phoenix.

I was absolutely thinking of conference killer Karl Benson.  I know he's not with the WAC anymore.  Twas a frivolous post.

Denver is in the Summit Conference and formerly was in the Sun Belt (they were a thorn in the side of our Soccer team).

The WAC was and is desperate to maintain enough teams to survive.

Denver is in the Summit, but your point is valid with them adding UT-RGV and UMKC
