There were 8 games played in the NIT last night, and 4 P5 schools lost to lower ranked teams from non P5 conferences including 1st seeded California losing at home to 8th seeded CSU Bakersfield.

I don't think P5 schools tend to see the NIT the same way many lower level schools (mid-major) see the NIT.

Except P5 schools win it a lot/most of time.  Of course so do Wichita State and George Washington.

Same ole scam as in football....the 'big boys' always end up playing at home.  It's a bid situation that most of the smaller schools cannot match.

Monmouth hosted Mississippi (SEC)

Boise State hosted Utah (Pac12)

Tonight Fresno State hosts TCU (Big XII)

There's also several schools from outside power leagues hosting others.

TCU is at home.  Regardless, your point still stands.

Went to frog game last night. Their $72 Mil renovation is beautiful. They have a really cool all sports hall of fame / all american / trophy section.

Amazing how much smaller their 7K seat gym feels than our 10K seats.

UH,TSU in talks to play football in 2018

Quote

"(TSU vice president for intercollegiate athletics) Charles McClelland and I have gotten together over the past six months to discuss the opportunity for our men's and women's basketball teams to play in their basketball venue while Hofheinz, now The Fertitta Center, is being renovated," said Hunter Yurachek, UH vice president for intercollegiate athletics.

"Charles has been very accommodating, and that led to discussions as we talked about what the facility-usage fee may look like, including the possibility of playing a football game in 2018."

The UH and TSU campuses are right next to each other: https://www.google.com/maps/place/University+of+Houston/@29.7219964,-95.3514072,15.5z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x8640be5a8ebea199:0xc9f387eca8247e7!8m2!3d29.7199489!4d-95.3422334?hl=en

Yeah I would settle for moving in that direction in the coming years.  UTA, TCU and SMU crushing it - time for us to step up.

TCU versus Georgia Tech in the final.

The three other metroplex schools are gonna be tough to catch up to.

Just my opinion but last night was a perfect example as to why I think we're seeing a future big time star on the rise in Jamie Dixon.

Going up against a much bigger team in UCF last night...without his best player. With a team made up of someone else's players and after getting down by 10 he didn't let them panic, he made some changes and coached them up to a 10 point lead in the second half. Then cruised late for the win and a trip to the final.

One of the top turnaround stories of the year and I expect something similar for us next year.  I think McCasland is THAT much better than what we've been used to.

...

Not very familiar with Jamie Dixon?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamie_Dixon

Nothing about him is "on the rise"...  he's already there.   He was killing it at Pitt during his time there, perennially challenging for (or winning) the Big East title. It's just that TCU decided to get serious about basketball (to the tune of over $3mil/yr)  and he is an Alumnus.

Beat me to it.

He struggled at times in the NCAA tournament, but he's a fantastic coach and has been for years.

The biggest leaps forward are going from awful to not awful...see Littrell's first football season here as proof. We basically improved 5 games--the last year of Mac/Chico saw us win one game because of miraculous circumstances (UTSA playing their 4th string QB in the second half let us win a game by a TD at home or else we are winless).

I suspect that McCasland's first year here will look a lot like Jankovich did here in his first season after Gales was fired in 1994, as well as Johnny Jones after Trilli. Both coaches went .500 or better in their first season, where the kids that stayed were excited as hell to have new coaches that were excited to be here. I suspect that will occur here, somewhere in the .500 range.

I will say this about the NIT when it comes to propelling a program forward. I've seen A&M, Wichita State, Baylor, and SMU use it to make major strides forward. I suspect that UTA and TCU will do the same, especially TCU, who has money, resources, conference pedigree, and ESPECIALLY a great head coach with great name recognition. It must be nice to have money and the interest of BMDs to care about revenue sports that way...

Taking over a 31 win team and keeping it there is one thing.

Taking over a 12 win team, winning 23 and be one win away from an NIT Championship is quite another.  To me that's taking the next step which is again jmo.

No doubt the TCU program is on the rise... due to Dixon for sure!

I just find it funny to call Dixon a "star on the rise", since he won National Coach of the Year before.  I'd say that's already a risen star by nearly all measures.

He definitely has TCU on the rise though.
