"Nick Smith had visions of what his freshman season at North Texas would hold when he arrived in Denton last fall.

None of them involved the news UNT’s coaches delivered just before the Mean Green’s opener against SMU. UNT’s staff wanted one of its top recruits to redshirt.

“I wasn’t planning on redshirting,” Smith said. “When I got the news, I was like, ‘Oh, man. Am I not good enough?’ That wasn’t the reason. We had a lot of backs, and they were good. I didn’t know the offense.”

Smith has that offense down pat now, which has helped him jump into one of the more interesting position battles of the spring for the Mean Green.

UNT has a star running back in Jeffery Wilson.

What the Mean Green will have behind Wilson is the question. The answer should become clearer over the next few weeks."
