Actually, Horrocks was drafted in the NBA.  So there is that and he is easily the best 7' footer ever at NT.  Of course there has only been 2 others to my knowledge and hopefully Brice can take that honor away from him.   Horrocks was actually a good player, but you make a good point; he probably is borderline on that list.

Horrocks played only for his final year(83-84) at North Texas after transferring from UTEP. He was drafted in the 4th round by the Mavericks but was a long shot to make their roster. It would have been nice if Blakely was retained for this season. Kenny Lyons may have decided to stay for his final year and North Texas would have honored its commitment to point guard Spud Webb.

Oh, what could have been. Blakely's replacement, Tommy Newman, was totally clueless at evaluating recruits. North Texas' basketball program quickly became a dumpster fire and has never fully recovered.

Did Lyons transfer?  I thought he played all 4 years for UNT?

If my memory is correct, Jon played 21/2 years for NT; there was some eligibility thing and he only played the last semester of his senior year.  Kenny Lyons played four great years at NT.  You may be thinking of Bobby Iverson who could have been a senior on Blakeley's first team if he had played his senior year.  People talk about Mitchell being a great athlete, Iverson may have been better.

As far as Spud Webb, I never understood how NT missed on him.  Just the novelty of someone that size that could jump that high was worth the scholarship.

Newman was another in the massive bad coach hire list that NT boosts.  One year college head coaching at Texas Wesleyan in which he clobbered NT was enough to qualify for the job. What Newman had at Texas Wesleyan was a bunch of players that were not eligible under NCAA rules, but that were really good ball players.   They played a fast paced game that we found out later was totally uncharacteristic for Newman's teams at NT.
