My only thought that hasn't already been added to this dead-horse discussion is this. At the P5 level, these kids are getting dozens of scouts eyes on them, both coaches and third-party experts. Who has whispered, tweeted, visited and invited is all tracked and logged. Everything about these four and five star kids is know, down to favorite cereal and their girlfriends name. These are good honest, thorough evaluations. To me, once a kid is between the two and three star category, the margin of error goes up. These kids could be ranked by these third party sites with one set of eyes, base on one highlight reel they had access to, maybe the opinion of one or two coaches. This is part of why i've always favored Billy's system. At least you know how many people, at some point, thought the kid had D1 potential.

It is, at our current level both of competitiveness and reputation, about identifying talent that works within our system, and developing it. As our W/L record and reputation improve, so will our recruiting. We have to do more with less, that's why so many coaches fail at UNT. We are in crap-shoot recruiting territory more often than not. I don't think either identification or development were McCarney's staff's strong points. I think our classes will get better, but I think it's a process. This class may have underachieved as far as winning heads up battles, we just have to hope each of these choices were thoughtful and intentional and not just last resorts. I probably spend more time on ranking sites than almost anyone, mostly to see who offers the kid. I think the stars and reputations of kids help us get more stars and reputation. One of the things about watching Litrell at the presser is that he wasn't fatigued by trying to recruit here. He didn't come across as worried or make excuses. Let the man work, besides, if he's too good too fast he won't be here anyway.

247 stats go back to 2003 so "ever" is from 2003 to present.

According to 247 sports, our highest ranked and rated class ever was 2008. We were 57th in the nation with a rating of .8012 and 15 3-stars(our most ever). Our top commit was .8667 rated Nate Jenkins. Notable players included: Jenkins, Riley Dodge, Troy Franklin, James Hamilton, Royce Hill, Dawaylon Cook, Lance Dunbar, Coleman Feeley, and Brandon Akpunku,

Our lowest ranked class ever was 2010. We were 117th in the nation with a rating of .7636 with zero 3-stars(our fewest ever). Our top commit was .7915 rated Zach Olen(our lowest top commit ever). Notable players included: Olen, Antonio Johnson, Mason Y'Barbo, Zach Orr, Brandin Byrd, Brelan Chancellor, Will Wright, Jamize Olawale, and Richard Abbe,

Our lowest rated class ever was 2011 with a rating of .7094 and we ranked 106th in the nation. We had 1 3-star who was the top commit, Freddie Warner was rated .8099. Notable players included: Derek Akunne, Aaron Bellazin, Antoinne Jimmerson, Lairamie Lee, Chad Polk, Cyril Lemon, Andrew Power, and Marcus Smith(a greyshirt from the 2010 class).

Our highest rated commit ever was in 2016 when William Johnson signed with a rating of .8707.

I understand correllation very well but I'd put the 2010 class up against the 2008 class with no reservations. Did the 15 3-stars play better than the pure 2-star class of '10? Nope. We had our Frank Wilson, the problem is, he didn't have the right coaches in place until it was too late. That was a failure our AD. If Littrell can get recruits to play at the same level as the 2010 class, I will take the 117th ranking every day of the week.

You were making a fair point until the last sentence.

So you are saying that 9 win seasons are not acceptable? You are saying that you wouldn't take a class stocked full of all-conference players and NFL prospects?

Performance be damned, we only care about the dog and pony show of a prospect ranking system and how good we should be on paper?

I'd rather take the 57th ranked in the nation with a coaching staff that can make them play up to their potential. I appreciate the positive thinking and spinning, but fact is until we recruit better we won't be able to have a maintained success.

I will always appreciate what our past players have done for this program.

I'm saying imagine the teams we might beat and bowls we might win if we actually got to the point where we were recruiting classes that ranked in the upper half of our conference, or even someday the top 50. If you don't want to see the North Texas program advance in the ranking and improve the talent on the field, then you obviously have a different plan for the future of our team.

People can say "Stars don't matter" all the want, but the Alabamas, Ohio States, Clemsons, and Michigans of the football world seem to be doing well with their 4 and 5 star guys.

One 9-win season surrounding years of losing seasons doesn't do anything for me. That's the problem. One bad class, ONE bad season, ONE good season... It's not about that.

If you can't recruit well, you have to rely on finding diamonds in the rough. Since all we do is dig in the rough... of course we'll find diamonds every now and then. But if you consistently can recruit, you can consistently win. Doesn't mean you WILL, but you can. If you CAN'T consistently recruit , you CAN NOT consistently win. Winning 9 games one time doesn't mean what you're doing is working. If it did, McCarney would still be here.

You missed the point. If he can recruit every class to play like the 2010 class, regardless of ranking, we will always have a 2013 caliber senior class. That means 9 wins every season, not just one surrounded by losing years. I'm talking about hitting on a '10 class every year.

No, YOU missed the point. Hitting on a '10 class every year isn't a thing that happens. Hitting on a bottom 10 recruiting class happens every once in a while, especially if what you're looking for is a single decent season. It's not like the '10 class only played one year. The POINT is that what you want to be done isn't a thing.

Seth's going to HAVE to hit on 2 low-rated recruiting classes, but if he doesn't recruit better soon, we'll continue to be what we are.

Find me someone who recruits consistently in the bottom 20 and wins a bunch of games.

The point, like the consequences of recruiting underperformance, tend to catch up with you whether you want it or not.

Yes but there is nothing we can do about that now.  It is best to move on.  Same thing with Benford.

But I do agree we need to learn from the past mistakes and to do that you have to shine the light and realize what they were.  Otherwise we are doomed to repeat the same ones again.

I don't recall the name William Johnson.  His name doesn't appear on the current roster.

Never made it to campus.  That's why winning the February Champeenship is ridiculous.
