We go thru this exercise every year, yet we always are mad that the coach here cannot change our reputation amongst the Texas HS coaches and parents overnight. We have sucked something fierce for the better part of 22 years as a FBS team again. We have 4 winning seasons in that timeframe. Our biggest wins in the last decade of play are beating Indiana, UNLV in the HoD Bowl and beating Army this past year. IOW, that doesn't move the needle around here at all. Since 2007, in the last 10 years, the FBS teams we have beaten are as follows: ULM twice, WKU 4x, Ball State twice, FAU 4x, MUTS twice, Indiana, Troy, ULL, South Alabama, Idaho, La Tech, USM twice, Rice twice, UTEP, Tulsa, UNLV, SMU, FIU, UTSA, Marshall, and Army. Against the teams we recruit against in CUSA West, we are 7-15 in the last decade, including Rice who we are 2-4 against, as well as UTEP, who we are 1-3 against in that timeframe, and they both finished below us in the recruiting rankings.

Those results aren't making many kids with other FBS offers to choose us over them. And the schedule we play here doesn't give any of them any reason to give us some extra thought when compared to other regional G5s.

Yet UTSA coaches faced the exact same problems and perceptions and got the job done.

Major staff changes are needed if this is the best recruiting they got in them.

Why can't we just stop making excuses and admit we need to do better?

PJ Fleck had a 1-11 record in 2013 and went out and recruited the number one class in the mac. He then had the number one class for the next 2 years which culminated in WMU's cotton bowl berth.

Finding "diamonds in the rough" will only take us so far. We have to do better in recruiting. There's no other way around it.

Lets all not forget that we have one of the best "recruiters" around over in the Super Pit.  Hows the basketball team doing this year on the court?  but don't worry they won many recruiting battles over the past several years.

UTSA kicked our ass this year on paper and that has me concerned, but lets see how many were reaches academically and socially.  Remember, it is just february, there is still a lot of time to go before these kids get to campus and then stay all 4 years.  Also, as i saw mentioned earlier, taking chances on kids that might be higher ranked but have a chance of not showing up in August is really a luxuray this staff can't afford right now due to our limited number of scholly players in the program.

Therefore, it does seem as though (listening to Littrell) that they took kids they are very confident would show up in August and stay with the program.  Once they get the overall numbers up then maybe they can start going for the bigger fish, but sometimes its 2am in the bar, you haven't been laid in over a year, and you have to give up on the smoking hot blonde for the cute homey girl that you know you can take home.  Now, after a few weeks of the homey girls you arn't as desperate for action, you start taking more chances with the super model type girls.

Yeah except this isn't accurate.  His recruiting classes have been middle of the pack CUSA.  His coaching abilities have obviously been less than middle of the pack.

As I had posted before, SUMG and I sat in a UNT Athletic Director's office in the early 80's and listened in awe (not the good kind) as that AD was almost bragging how the new modus operendi at North Texas was to all but dismantle the national progress we'd made under Fry's 6 years, make all the teacher's college crowd of that era happy (again) as he spoke to us about doing all that with almost a sparkle in his eyes.   SUMG & I left that meeting ready to comitt Harry-Carey or go on an all night drunk (albeit we didn't).   We were (still are) just like many of you--alums extremely passionate about our school's athletic program.  Amazing just how quickly time has flown by, though.

From that 1982 day on & IMO our athletic program has never been the same; that is, never the same to those of us who actually got more excited about playing (and beating) a SEC Tennessee Vols team rather than mixing it up with schools most of us had never even heard of in the 70's that comprise most of the CUSA membership today.

I can't even tell you if there was a UTSA in existence on that 1976 evening we travelled what the Austin American-Statesmen said were almost 20,000 Mean Green fans to DKR Memorial for the first time any school like us of that era (La Tech, Southern Miss, Tulsa, etc) had ever even scheduled The University of Texas.  (Fry initially signed them for a 4 game series which would expand to more games in later decades).    Some of you younger guys probably think we who mention some of this past at North Texas are on some serious meth, souped up Geritol or worse.  Of course, when you get to be an older fart you tend to repeat yourself along with old war stories to a level of ad nausem to those much younger.

Fact is, in those early 80's our program was given a new direction with low goals.  Easy to meet small goals, isn't it, but we rarely even did that.  The early 80's became the 'undoing of one that some on this forum even now try to turn into "the real Darth Vader of NTSU" yet that one who had the audacity to say North Texas (State) was exceptional.  So  we lost that fight to the Boys Downtown & the old Nestors in Denton who were just fine with NT having a teacher's college state of mind.

So the Beat Goes On......Many of us would then begin to observe about 6 former conference mates who had figured out the formual to a successful NCAA college athletic program as they went "beep beep" right past us.   I can see 2 or 3 schools in CUSA now that could easily make history repeat itself for all of us again as our Denton braintrust still tries to figure out this thing called NCAA college athletics; that is, as we continue to attempt to find our true identity; which shade of green fits our school best and if we want to be UNT or NT with separate logo letters or intertwined.

"Mrs. Lincoln, other than what happened tonight, did you enjoy the play?"   (WHAT THE HELL)?

OK, to go 180 degrees after the above diatribe which some might have interpreted as some sort of a white flag,  but fact still remains that some of us feel damn good with Wren Baker as the North Texas AD & that because he came from successful programs and seems to have a sense of what's missing in Denton but to quote Bill Clinton post-Monica Lewinsky sex scandal...........LISTEN TO ME NOW........NO ATHLETIC DIRECTOR CAN UNDO ALL THAT'S HAPPENED AT UNT THE LAST 40 YEARS IN ONE or 2 YEARS.............AND...............

.................... I still have this ridiculous 6'th sense karma kind of thing that says Seth Littrell is going to flush all the sludge from our storied & mismanaged football coaching past along with the poor recruiting practices that came with it and........slowly (but surely).......... get this thing called Mean Green football turned around.   The timing for that to happen couldn't be any better for the many of us who don't have too many more 5 year plans left.

GMG!

All I'm saying is that until proven otherwise here, this place is not somewhere that recruits will come when offered by other comparable G5s. We are beating FCS schools for recruits. And it really hasn't mattered who was coach, where we played, or the conference we have played in since 1995. Simon, Dickey, Dodge, MCCarney, Littrell, Fouts Field, Appgee Stadium, Big West, SBC, or CUSA...always the same ranking between 90 and 125.

People forget he had several of the best recruiting classes we ever had, based on recruiting websites. Not to mention he carried that over to LSU and signed a #1 draft pick. Just couldn't get it done in other ways at the SEC level.

Just an update: we are now 12 out of 14 ahead of only UTEP and Rice.

We have dropped because of them pulling out the blue-shirts from the class, when before they had them included. This class is still a top 10 class, with the likes of Cain(multiple D1 offers), Tibbs, Spoon, and the Punter, and Izzy

They shouldn't count because they are not in this year's recruiting class as signees. Lol. "A top 10 class." That's one way to put it.

If they don't count to this class.. then we should count the likes of Jenkins, Hoston, Wyche, and others??? they all outrank the guys I named LOL so the class is even higher

No idea why this got a dislike, but I guess adding our past blueshirts who would count to this class and improve it is something fans don't like since we can't count this years blue-shirts since they are tech. a 2019 signee.. .

As long as you're prepared to go and add all the blueshirts for every other team in the country... I'll wait for you to research this.

No, it isn't.

Otherwise it would be rated as such.

Saying it on an Internet forum doesn't make it so.

Finished it.. looks like we would be 7th or 8th... with Jenks being our #2 recruit and Hoston with #3 along with Wyche coming in as #8 with Jackson Thomas lower on the list and  2 players who didn't get ranked!

We can either include the likes of Jenks, Hoston, Wyche, Thomas with this class since they actually count vs this class, or we can include the blue-shirts that 24/7 took off.. the blue-shirts from this year or lower ranked than Jenks, Hoston, Wyche.. With the likes of Tibbs, Spoon, Punter, were included earlier today now removed since they didn't sign LOI

You include who sign an LOI on national signing day (and those who sign one shortly after).

that is your class.

You can do whatever you want. It still won't make this a good class. And it won't be accurate unless, as I stated, you make the same adjustments for every other team.

I did it for the rest of C-USA when I did this! other classes only added lower guys that would given them a minor bump!

Either way the class moves up if we can't last years blue-shirts or this years.. The BS from last year that would count vs this year actually move the class higher just looking at with Jenks and Hoston given the class around a 8 to 10 bump each with 2 guys that count as 0 that aren't factored in...

Blue shirts included, it's still a poor class.

Weird, because I don't see your numbers for all 14 teams anywhere.

I did the same, and it moved us to 14th.
