what is a gray shirt and what is a blue shirt?

Is this just not just a preferred walk-on?

Gray Shirt - Arrive to campus a semester early(Spring of senior year) allowing workouts and  spring practice. Eligibility doesn't start until the fall of that year (See Ozougwu or Pearson)

Blue Shirt - PWO until first day of class, then they are put on scholarship. Eligibility starts immediately, but the scholarship counts towards next year's total

No, grayshirt means they offered a scholarship but the player delays participation until spring semester of first year - i.e. They skip their first fall of college football. No particpation.

Greenshirt is graduate early from HS, participate in spring drills at college, participate in football in first fall of college.

A lot of upside to this signing. A DE with 4.7 speed...if he can gain weight....or a possibility at other positions if not.

A little weight and he can be a great LB in this system.  Maybe the coaches think he can put on enough to become a DE?

Ozougwu was a grey shirt. He graduated in May. Then went juco that fall then enrolled the next spring

Looks like he could put on a few pounds, but this arrangement allows him some weight program time.  In Ek I trust!

The key here is that while at the JUCO he was enrolled in less than 12 hours. 12 hours is the threshold for being a full-time student, and starting one's eligibility (5 years to play 4) counter.

Gray shirts delay full-time enrollment a semester later than traditional first-year college students. Ozougwu was a grayshirt, Pearson was just an early enrollee.

And blueshirts don't need wait to be put on scholarship until school starts. They are usually put in scholarship as soon as fall camp starts.

FWIW, it does not matter where the gray shirt attends as long as they takes less than 12 hours.  I am not certain, but Jojo may have been at UNT in the Fall following his graduation, but he would have had to take less than 12 and could not be involved with the team that Fall.
