Absolutely agree with this concept.

There are also plenty of exceptions, where a kid may qualify late, be recovering from an injury, etc. that turn off the P5 guys and they choose to move on. Kids who hold or held notable offers and fall into a criteria based off of circumstances above can certainly be difference makers at a place like UNT.

Wasn't there some sort of "academic exception" the UNT administration was offering that was a loophole to land several of these players (named 'Prop' something)? Eventually this went away, but I am fairly certain that there was.

It was called prop 48, I believe.   Were a player could be on ship but not play for a year and than if he was academically eligible; he could play.  This was done away with long ago and actually I don't think NT used it all that much.  Buckles is the only player I remember that NT successfully used this tactic.

Prop 48.  It is how we landed Jonas Buckles.

Grand,

I just don't agree that Dickey had "one great class that he lucked into", as so many people have claimed.  He had 12 DaMN State Top 100s.  Yes, about half of them signed in one class.  But that means half didn't.

Either half of those 12 are better than any other coach has done.  Again Dodge only had his son, and Mac only had Terian Goree.    So in other words, even if you disregard every recruit in that great class, Dickey was still the best recruiter we have had since our return to 1A/FBS.

Based on that one metric.  So basically, you are "disregarding every recruit" that wasn't named to the Dallas Morning News' list.  And other than that one year, no recruiting class was built with players on that list.

I am saying that if you forget half of those 12, getting the other half of that 12 is something that hasn't been equaled.

Dickey had some very nice recruiting successes at times.  But by most measures, he wasn't very consistent.

Never said he was consistent.  He was just the best we have had since he return to 1A/FBS.  Who has out recruited him here?

I really don't see much appreciable difference between him and Dodge.  As I recall, Dodge averaged better recruiting classes per the recruiting service rankings and per players receiving other offers, so I suppose I would give Dodge the slight nod.

Recruiting sites didn't really exist in their modern form under Dickey, they barely did under Dodge.  The reason I used the DaMN State Top 100 to compare the eras was because it existed in both.

Using that metric, Dodge pulled in one recruit (his son), and Dickey pulled in 12 (none of them being his offspring, as far as I know).

If that doesn't convince you, we'll have to agree to disagree.   I don't really see any evidence that Dodge out recruited Dickey, especially on the field.

I just know this:
Dickey recruited the top WR in UNT history; Dodge recruited the top RB.

What does it mean?  Nothing.  Stars are given to high school recruits going to college, not college players eligible for the NFL draft.

So, as Gand Moff Tarkin would say, "This bickering is pointless!"

Leaving only the remaining open question, then, as what exactly does one have to do to become a "Grand" Moff as opposed to a run-of-the-mill Moff?  What set this Tarkin guy above the rest of the Moffs that made him so...capital G, Grand?

I'm not sure what you mean by that.  Rivals and Scout were in full swing by the last 3 or 4 years of Dickey.

Dickey was clearly the better coach.  You could have given Dodge a class full of top non-BCS (G5) recruits, and he still would have had a losing record.
