With 5 spots left does it make sense to keep 2 spots opened for some late action? May be a HS, Juco or transfer. Or do will fill it out?

There is more spots available. A couple currently committed are blue shirting. There is some wiggle room

Will this leave us reliant on smaller classes and blue shirting in the future? How do we break the cycle?

You can always push back spots to next year. The way to break the cycle IMO is to sign enough high school recruits, get them to stay for their whole careers, and get the total scholarship count up to 85 by only needing to sign, say 22 kids. Then those kids plus your blueshirts are at or under 25 for the class but the team total is up at or near 85.

High school kids is the catch though. Take, for example, Eric Jenkins. He blueshirted (I believe although not offficialy disclosed), and has been well worth the scholarship. But, he counts towards the 2017 class, and we only get one year left of him compared to 4 years from the high school guys. We're using a spot on Jenkins (and any other jucos who came in as juniors) in 2017, and then having to replace him the next class in 2018. Similar to a grad transfer. Sign Morris in 2016, replace his spot in 2017.

Keeping those to a minimum is key to breaking the blueshirt-out-of-necessity cycle and getting us to 85 scholarships. Or at least ending it ASAP.

They should keep 1 or 2 spots open for late guys if they can get them to count vs the 2017 class, but I think they would fill the class then have whoever come here and blue-shirt them if possible. We are just needing to max out our classes now to prep for the # of Jrs and Snrs we will be losing in the next year or 2.

I hope Littrell is like McCarney in one respect.   McCarney always seemed to have a lot of ships open after he had reportedly given out his last one.

Well SL and the staff did it last year, with the additions of players like Jenkins, Wyche and anothers that came in. I'm sure we will add some guys after NSD
