Hell, flip a coin.

At this point ANYONE would be better than Benford. The team has not won a game since Dec 20th!!!!!!! What's the worse that could happen? Finish last in CUSA?

The margin of the losses gets bigger? Players refuse to play games? Players leave the program mid-season?

Out of the remaining coaches not named Rob Evans, who do you hand this hot mess to -- Dan O'Dowd or David Anwar?

At this point it really doesn't matter, as long as Benford is removed from the equation. Either can can hold the wheel on this sinking ship, while we start the search for a basketball coach.

Let them. No one is at the Super Pit to watch them anyway, and this season is already lost. Our new coach will want to recruit to his style of play anyway. Had Benford been replaced last off-season, we would not be in this spot.

So a player that would refuse to play in a game would be someone you would want in your program?

Don't say it can't get any worse when it can. Those are things that could happen and it would make things worse.

Besides, players leave teams all the time when there is a coaching change and they leave for all sorts of reasons.

If that were to happen, and I believe it could be a possibility, then Benford was recruiting the wrong kind of players. Those jerseys say North Texas on them, not Benford. If they don't want to play for North Texas, then they can follow Benford to where ever he ends up.

We would be winless either way. So why would you let the architect of this disaster continue to be employed?

if the players want to make a point and boycott/leave, so what? Who would take them seriously if they were on an 8 game losing streak?

send the msg that losing will not be tolerated. Cut the losses, even if it's some players.

With Benford I feel there is still a chance to win a game. Fire him and you basically are waving the white flag on the season. Either way, it's a lose-lose situation.

Then let them leave, let's find out who really wants to be here.

Can't believe you want this guy to keep coaching.

Why not just forfeit all the games for the rest of the season? It's the same thing, right?

Either way this plays out, Benford is gone and we have a new coach named in April.

Hmm ever think these guys are tired of playing for Benford and a change would make them play better?

Nonsense. Did that happen when McCarney or Dodge was replaced? Of course not.

The players would be relieved and I'd bet play a hell of a lot better.

Completely unknown how the team might respond. Everyone here is just throwing out guesses hoping they'll hit the jackpot.

No, it isn't. We have two recent examples with DMac and Dodge.

Good gosh, what are you afraid is going to happen?

Not afraid of anything to be truthful. I just see where any chance at a win evaporates if Benford gets canned is all. Strictly my opinion. We're not going to land a new coach any cheaper if we wait until the end of the season. The new coach will be named in April or late March at the absolute earliest. The interim coach won't be making any drastic changes and the poor fundamentals won't be fixed with just 6 weeks left in the regular season.

So you want to keep him around so he could possibly go 1-10 or 2-9 in his last 11 games?

Do you think we could do better without him? I don't. The two Florida schools are our best shot for a win followed by UTEP. Everything else on the schedule is loss unless we catch someone asleep at the wheel.

What does those 3 wins get you? Nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Firing Benford now sends a much stronger message to your fan base than let's keep him just so we might win 3 games.

It could get the team into the conference tournament. It might mean something to someone, the players and their parents perhaps, to make the tournament or even not go winless in conference play. People are looking for that Portland State equivalent loss and not making the tournament would be up there for me.

Firing Benford might give some people warm fuzzies but I doubt it'll be enough to cause a meaningful spike in attendance for the rest of the season. For me, it's an unfortunate part of the sporting world because in the end, all that matters are wins and losses, but I'm not going to feel empowered or whatever you're suppose to feel because someone lost their job.

As with any new coach, there will be hope things will be better next year but at the same time it's a risk that it won't work out.
