And whom may that be?  I doubt it is Coach Robb Evans, he and Benford are like family.   Is there another assistant below Evans that could bring said player improvement?  Or could it become worse, like a rudderless ship?  I understand people being upset about Benford, he had his shot and blew it.  I just don't think firing him before the season ends adds anything positive to our situation.  Redemption perhaps, but no significant value.  Wren can be looking for another coach while Benford coaches the team.

Who said it had to be assistant?  I definitely would not want Evans.  Again, get a good retired coach that may want another taste or a long shot a chance.

Why does anyone think Baker has not been looking for the next coach a long time?  Hiring an interim or keeping Benford doesn't change that. The positive is that an interim would be charged with the development of the underclassmen.  Do you think giving a lot of minutes to Reese, Johnson, Green, and Frazier is going to make this program better?

There are only two rational reasons to keep Benford at this point.   One to save a relatively small amount of money.   The other is the hope that he can rally the troops enough to win the conference tournament, a very long shot at best.  IMO, it is more likely after watching Benford for a painful 4 and a half that a newcomer could make a charge in the tournament.

Agree 100%, completely pointless to keep Benford around. The whole "family" thing is laughable.

Give someone a shot a shot in the interim. That would for sure give a better chance at a late season run than keeping the same status quo as the last 4.5 years of horrible coaching.

Would any of these available options possibly do worse? What is there to lose?

It's just a public execution for the few fans we have left.  There's not going to be a good pool of candidates until after season anyway, his contract is guaranteed through the season and it will just alienate the players if they think we didn't give him the season to turn it around.

Letting him serve out his disasterous contract will just reinforce to those fans that UNT needs back that it's the same ole UNT with a new face at AD.

Its better to get the player used to the idea of a different coach sooner than later.  This thing is going nowhere this year.

If not one of the current assistants not named Rob, then put Jared Mosley in to oversee things through the end of the season.

Send a message that this crap is not acceptable.

Keeping Benford in place when it is completely obvious he isn't coming back can on be a negative for everyone involved.

Plus, think of all the office supplies that will disappear by the end of the season.
