This is exactly what we need to do. A G5 school simply isn't going to have large media rights money. All the G5s are going to see decreases in what they get for their rights simply because there isn't the money available that there once was. Advertisers are now concentrating on ACTUAL eyeball and no longer buying the "potential" viewers based on market size. And the cash the media companies received from subscribers is steadily declining between the "cord cutters" and more a la carte offerings that don't include ESPN et al.

@Arkstfan several years ago showed how increasing ticket sales and fan donations will actually generate MORE money than G5 schools ever got from TV. You do that by building the fan base. And the surest way to build a fan base is playing regional schools that fans can develop a real want to beat.

Increase the student fee to $15,000 per semester per student, leave me to bask in the glory of fewer than 100 people at my current (paltry) donor level, bring home a P5 invitation and a national championship, bow before me and kiss my ring, or GTFO.

It would be very interesting to see the numbers for 2015-16 and 2016-17.  With all the buyouts/increased coaching salaries plus the decrease in TV revenue, it is not going to be pretty.  I believe the student fee was raised by $1 in the last couple of years so I assume that unless donations are way up then the university has ponied up the remaining difference.

If 15k got that, would you sign off?

Well, one reason we have to have football is all the music education majors need marching band practice.  Solution: have a taller radio antenna installed, so as to broadcast KNTU all the way from South Texas to North Ontario.  There's a lot of people who would like some jazz to listen to, now that the OASIS is gone, and they wouldn't mind that some very expensive advertising came on every once in a while.  I mean, hey, Wolfman Jack.  You may ask, would our artsy-fartsy students and profs go for "renting time to Pentecostal preachers and psychics, and...taking 50 percent of the profit from anything sold by mail order"?  I don't know, but once it got started, people wouldn't stop talking about it anytime soon.

We need to remember that this was before the RV/WB Report was turned in about how to change the financial outcome of  all the sports. I believe in a post by Vito when he got a copy of the report said something that Athletics is paying for Apogee instead of the school. Also, we need to remember WB brought in someone to just to just focus on the books and see where we can cut and adjust the spending. What I think is needed and something WB and the staff should look into is finding ways to create and find new ways of generating cash.

We have talked about it on here before. Many people on here would pay 25-100 bucks to have dinner with the coaches and WB. Would be great if they did something like a week or 2 before the spring game talking about this past season, or even the recruits that they just signed and how they would work into the gameplan for next year. Selling bricks for something like "Alumni Ally" and have it be from the buses to Apogee where they walk in, or on the Alumni side. We have to get current students emotionally connected. Do Q/As with former players like Quinn, Hall, Spencer, Kennedy, Cobb, Orr, etc.. We even talked about the Mean Joe Greene Statue, and we had a plan for it to be designed but RV was canned before it was completed. Yes, the coaches are busy during the Summer and Fall, and the first few weeks of Spring. But after signing day, it should slow day till spring practices. Many of us, would be willing to chip in a few bucks to go see SL and Ek/GH talk about schemes or old football stories or even about players and how their position groups developed, or WB to talk about his vision and how we all be involved.

Yes we should, but we also can't change what has happened. Plus, EVERY coaching hire is a gamble so we need to be ready to buy out contracts if a coach isn't working out after a reasonable amount of time. "Reasonable" is up for definition - some would suggest a single bad loss while other's would give five years - but the fact of the mater is buy out money is going to be needed at some point no matter who is hiring whom.

Every single hire of RV's in major sports since JJ has had to be bought out, culminating with the RV buyout. That is awful, terrible hiring. Period. That isn't what "other institutions do." Other institutions would have canned his ass after the Dodge hire.

For god sakes, please stop expecting and accepting failure.

There was one exception since JJ.

Ya, I forgot about Aston. But it's not like she set the world on fire here. She got the Texas job based on what she had done elsewhere and close ties to the UT program.
