Why do you suppose basketball refs don't use michrophones to announce calls ?  It seems an easy extension from a wireless mic on a football field to an indoor venue of a much smaller size.  Do other sports use a wireless mic ?  Soccer ?  Rugby ?  Obviously not baseball.  I wonder why.

I've never heard of soccer using a mic.

The people who need to hear the refs (scorers along the sideline) can generally hear the refs. Mic'ing the refs would be a nice to have as fans but it's not required.

All three refs would need to be mic'd if we're gonna go that route.

For football, since the scorers are such a long ways away from the ref they can't hear whatever the infraction or situation is with the call on the field.

As for FB that's true.  But we used hand signals for about one thousand years first.  Remember the center page of the program always listed the referees signals..

Back to BB.  NT could be a pioneer here.  Like Tex Schram.

And I'm sure a landline or radio was used whenever the ref needed the game clock adjusted for whatever reason by the scorer up in the press box.

Three refs means three wireless mics which means three receivers. I'm sure Wren Baker might listen to your suggestion and gladly take a donation from you to help get the needed audio equipment.

What you are asking for is more for the benefit of the fans in the stands than it is the scorers who are right there on the court.
