Rod Rust in my opinion has always been underrated at NT with the familiar refrain that you have put forth.   He did it all based on Mitchell's recruits, which is not true.  The facts are that much to his credit, Mitchell because of the early integration of NT recruited black athletes with basically no Texas competition.   That changed and it would have been very difficult for anyone to coach at NT with the resources than available.   

Luckily for NT and probably to the detriment of Rust's reputation, he was followed up with Fry.
