Morris starts and wins the UTEP game but Fine is ready to go for the bowl game. Who do you start?

Morris looks to have a good touch on his deep passes.  Fine was on a downward slope going into his injury.  I think if Morris can beat UTEP you stay with the hot hand.

Let Morris start the Bowl Game

If Morris wins Saturday, he should start. I say that as someone who watched the UTSA game.

If it's a close decision for the coaches, I say go with the guy who will play like it's his last game, because it will be... Let him leave it all on the field.

For a true freshman, Mason Fine has garnered plenty of experience. Morris throws open receivers and doesn't hesitate as much as Fine. Due to this, he's a higher risk/reward guy and our offense kind of needs that right now. I think Morris should get every rep for both games.

Truth be told, he should've taken the reigns back over during the Army game.

Not gonna lie, being up 17-0 after the first quarter (a very rare North Texas achievement no matter who has been the head coach) felt pretty great.  And, especially because on the drive in, the radio folk kept pumping up the greatness of the Southern Miss defense.

I'd say that if we beat UTEP, have Morris start the bowl game.  If he bogs down, put in Fine.

Regarding the part in bold above, I kind of wonder if Fine had another injury (or two or three) that wasn't quite enough to keep him from playing.  I really have no idea, but after the beating he has taken, it wouldn't surprise me at all if the cumulative effects of a million sacks started hurting his throwing motion or footwork.  If so, then he might come back prepared to play his best game of the year.

Downward slope?

vs LaTech and UTSA he had a 69% completion rate and threw for around 230 y/g.

He threw a TD pass in each game - that's 6 games in a row with one TD pass - and one rush TD.

He scrambled for 1st downs.

For six weeks he maintained a managerial pace.

What caught up to him were the fumbles coming all at once over those two games due to his play style (slide, for chrissake) and INTs that didn't go our way (see near INTs vs Army that we turned into TDs/TD drives).

Play both.

Amen, been saying this since the UTSA game... Let fine come in and play the running QB role/ at times passer role.... This helps out the RBs and WRs as well

its crazy also... me and few other people have been saying this for weeks and we were called not supporting Fine.. and Morris has a good game and everyone flips... Morris gives this Offense the best chance to pass the ball, which also leads to opening it up for the running game... Having Fine and Morris as well play makes both of them more dangerous as well...

yes morris has thrown his share of INTs but you don't see Morris out there taken sacks or staying in the pocket at times like Fine.. Morris will throw picks but he will also throw the ball out of bounds to save you a 8 to 10 yard sack... Morris should be the choice for the Bowl game as well, but let Fine get into the game as well at times, let Fine get into a bowl game even for a few drives because it will help prep him for in the future as well..

Welcome to the "what have you done for me lately" department...

I don't know who was favored in the USM game, but I think with the exception of the B-C game we were underdogs in the other games we won. The games we won with our Freshman QB. Now, even if he's ready to play, some people want to play the guy who was at QB when we beat a team who barely had a pulse.

i'm fine with Mason.

USM was favored, at least by ESPN's % rating.

That said, play both. Let the senior leave it all on the field, let the freshman be the sudden shock if the other team gets a rhythm. It'd be a good idea to make the QBs work with different looks so the defense can't get a bead on 'em.

+1000. Then let him hop off and scramble when needed. What happens if he gets a little gassy up there?

INT's and fumbles far outweigh those stats.  Don't get me wrong I think the world of the young man.  I truly hope he has a long and illustrious career here.

I would like to see us try some jet sweep passes with Fine.  It would create lots of problems on the outside.

We did that this past weekend with Morris-to-Buyers, no? Worked pretty well, so I guhgree.

Yeah they do, especially when they come all at once. He was INT free for the longest time, but not because of decision-making, more because of luck.

Hopefully he watches Morris work the pocket, move towards the sidelines, before throwing it away or running ob.

Morris has the stronger arm and Fine has better wheels. Morris should be on Fine's shoulders so there is still a run threat.

Fine on Morris' shoulders...that's the kind of thing RV would have done.

I would have Fine go in motion in the jet sweep and take the handoff like a jet sweep for a WR.  He is definitely fast enough to get to the outside and should not get dropped behind the line.  If the run is there he runs it.  If they are biting too hard on the run, the pass should be open.  At minimum a 1 on 1 matchup.

that's true... I might as well be running the wishbone with my lack of creative thought...

but seriously, can someone photoshop Morris on Fine's shoulders?

For a true freshman with not exactly the kind of supporting cast Derek Thompson had on January 1, 2014 at the HOD Bowl I think the kid has done ok.

Based on last week, you have to start Morris & if he ain't getting the job done we do have a kid who was instrumental (before nagging injuries) in helping this team win a few.  Wish we could  ask some of Mason Fine's teammates what their .02 would be on the subject.

➡️Watch them celebrate with Mason Fine on some of the videos after some of those wins he managed well for a frosh' & for one who was basically thrown to the wolves this season.  (Yes in deed, that's all part of the game, too).

BEAT UTEP!
