Southern Miss continues struggles, falls at North Texas

The Southern Miss football team continued to stumble on the road Saturday night, falling 29-23 to North Texas.

The Golden Eagles (5-6, 3-4) have lost five of their last six games and will have to beat Conference USA West champion Louisiana Tech in Friday's regular season finale to earn bowl eligibility.

USM will be an underdog against Louisiana Tech as it looks to avoid its fourth losing season in the last five years.

Freshman Keon Howard again received the start at quarterback for USM with senior Nick Mullens not yet fully recovered from a concussion he suffered on Nov. 5 against Charlotte.

Howard, a Laurel native, finished 10-of-26 passing for 135 yards and three interceptions. He ran 12 times for 40 yards.

North Texas jumped out to a 20-0 lead in the second quarter, but Southern Miss responded with its own 23-0 run

The Golden Eagles took a 23-20 lead on a 25-yard field goal by Gulfport native Stephen Brauchle with 9:39 remaining.

North Texas answered on its following possession as Willy Ivery ran 11 yards for a touchdown to cap a six-play, 65-yard drive. The Mean Green led 27-23 with 7:34 left.

USM, which was backed up inside its own 10 at time, gave up a safety with 3:08 remaining in order to get better field position, but never really threatened to erase the 29-23 North Texas lead.

Howard was picked off by Nate Brooks at midfield with 1:10 remaining to put the game to rest.

North Texas (5-6, 3-4) moved within one win of reaching bowl eligibility. It travels to UTEP on Saturday in search of its sixth win.

      Well, not a lot to go on other than the attached video on Crosby. Haven't found an entire game yet. This staff has done a great job with juco pickups over the years, so I can't question this one. Curious why the lack of quality offers though. The Thomas signing is ok considering he just started his senior season in high school. He looks a legit 6-7 with a very good body build. He could develop his game more but he is not the "great" recruit as advertised. I have subscribed to NFHS for a number of years now and recently saw his playoff game against Plano East last year. He's an above average HS center (presently) on a loaded Allen team. I'm sure we signed him to play the 4 as he does not have a perimeter game. Wish we had signed DJ Hall of Plano East who is better. Kid signed with Texas State as their highest recruit ever. Never saw any UNT offers.

      What is this program missing?

      Defensive recruiting/coaches have taken a backseat to offensive recruiting/coaches. I truly hope Morris quickly figures out that defense is necessary for winning. We just can’t rely on out scoring teams. I also hope Morris starts protecting the defense with his offensive play calls. When the defense just got off the field after a long drive by the other team, don’t be so aggressive with long passes that have us turning the ball over in less than a minute. Try to burn some clock and sustain a drive allowing the defense to rest and get adjustments from coaches.

      What is this program missing?

      Its all about recruiting, it takes years for a coach to develop a consistent recruiting cycle, and Morris has only had one full year of recruiting, I do think the program is going in the right direction.
