UTSA's hiring of a Head Coach bring up a interesting question -

Does your HC need to be an X's and O's person or do you hire a (reportedly) Great recruiter and delegate the X's and O's?

Don't get me wrong I am as happy as I can be with Seth and would not want to change his hiring and believe he will build a very good program. Just wondering what people thought?

This is the question I have. Wilson is by every account a top recruiter and has NFL and SEC coaches on his staff. UNT appears to work the coaching a scheme angle and let the scheme help with recruiting and matchups. It embodies the XX and Os versus Jimmies and Joe's arguement. I think time will ultimately tell the tell.

Something we need to remember is being a head coach is also managing people. Not just your players but your staff. At the end of the day, You need a whole staff to succeed as they colectively probably do more recruiting than the 1 HC and collectively probably deal more with the Xs and Os.

Considering where both programs were last year, I think Seth immediately has shown he knows how to assemble a good staff. Wilson as well. What will be interesting to see is how they replace current staff members who might end up leaving for bigger jobs elsewhere.

It's not really 1 game. There's a lot of growth within the coaching staff that needs to take place. There are some serious offensive issues that need addressing. Our stats speak for themselves. And they're currently not speaking very fondly, offensively.

Give me a salesperson that has a good OC and DC. Salesperson brings in the goods and the OC/DC get them ready to roll.

Don't you think this has to do with the abilities of the offensive line? It's pretty obvious that we are very hamstrung by what we can and cannot run due to the guys up front.

But your logic is flawed. Just because it isn't proven to be, doesn't mean it's proven not so either. I HIGHLY doubt Wilson isn't a solid coach and SL isn't a solid recruiter. Those guys didn't get to where they were on accident.

Need to have both.  A successful coach typically has to be a jack of all trades.  He needs to coach including being strong on all x's & o's, recruit, manage his coaching staff and yet be personable enough to go out there and engage the fanbase/alums etc.

Flawed? Wilson hasn't proven he can coach. Too small a sample size. Littrell hasn't had a full recruiting cycle to recruit. They haven't had the opportunity to prove themselves.

Exactly. And let's not act like Wilson won with all his awesome recruits. Those were predominately Coker recruits.

I think it's unfair to both Coach's to put too much weight on this year. Both teams are running new schemes and aren't coaching players recruited  to work in those schemes. I'm reserving judgment until I can see who they recruit and what they do with them.

answer is Jimmys and Joes. We need players to bolster the guys we already have. I wish some of those late qualifiers (like the oline dude) would have hit so that they could help us immediately. Our O is still so far behind, I wouldn't be surprised to see some offensive JC players in this upcoming class.

It is a very interesting question regardless of this game.   At a program like UNT at the end of 2015 we need both.  However in programs that lack recent (past 20 years)  relevance a recruiter/salesman/manager is more important than scheme.  I think we have seen (whether it Seth or Todd Dodge) the spread is not magic.  So if your head coach can identify talent and match that talent with assistant coaches that can bring the best out of them is far more important than the X's & O's.   Probably 60% of FBS games are decided by the talent gaps between the teams.  Programs that emphasize scheme over talent are limiting themselves or just managing the recruiting limitations their academic institutions  put on them (reference the Service Academies).  Seth maybe strong at recruiting than we give him credit for.  I don't think head coach here has really dominated recruiting within our conference Sun Belt nor CUSA.  Only time will tell when it comes to Seth's recruiting.

Yeah like having OL who had more than our offer to play D1 ball.. It will take time chill, I want to win as bad as the next guy and we had a chance.  Fine pressed to make plays which you can be mad at, I like that he's trying to make plays to win.  Do I want h throwing picks? Absolutely not and he needs to learn and will, when to take that shot and when to live for another down.  The open TD he missed he threw off his back foot because he had a defender barreling down on him.  He didn't get much help from WR/OL at the same time on his sacks.  The kid will be fine, he's playing behind a pretty average OL and will get better as time goes on.  We out gained UTSA in yardage so I'm not sure what stats you're talking about.  We can't over react, look at SMU, decent recruiting class for his first/late class, not much success at all, but competitive in games in year 1.  Year 2, much better recruiting and winning without their stud QB, pick up a signature win, and will sign a better class than last.  It just takes time there are not many places where it can get fixed immediately, much less when your coach is playing an FBS schedule with an FCS roster in terms of size
