What if we had beaten Portland and Mc had won 2 more games?  Would changes be taking place?

The Portland game was the shot heard around the world!

So for the long term losing to Portland was a good thing?

i think it was decided before the game that mac was getting fired...so i don't think it would have mattered

If this were the case, would RV have terminated McCarney immediately following the game in the locker room?  Or, was it already decided and then the result of the game led to the immediate termination?  Either way, I think the Portland State game was a blessing in disguise.

If we do what ifs.....what if back in the 70s we had been accepted into the SWC.

We went 7-4, 7-4, 10-1 (ranked 16th), and 9-2 with Haden Fry.  Apparently one team blocked us from acceptance.

With UT, A&M, TCU. Baylor, Arkansas, etc coming here each year, attendance would have been really good, recruiting would have been much easier, Fry would have had bowls to go to, and the SWC might have lasted years longer.

Instead, UNT spirals downward and out of Division 1, smu gets their football program shut down, Arkansas leaves, and the SWC breaks up.

He may have waited a little longer. However, it gave him a great excuse to do it sooner and without any question that it was the right move.

The decision to fire Mac was made long before the game - the news was spreading by social media, and through the tailgate area, all day.  But the word was that it would happen the next week.

In my opinion, we might have lost regardless, given how badly things were going with the team, and how well Portland State was doing last year, but because Mac knew he was gone, he gave up, the rest of the coaching staff gave up, and therefore the team gave up - leading to the debacle, and RV pulling the trigger immediately after the game.

That's the scenario that makes me the most depressed. Just imaging UNT in the Big12 now and going to games at a 50-60 thousand seat stadium. It's maddening but enduring the past 23 seasons of losing will make the consistent winning that much sweeter.

1. I don't know if Mac would still be here or not. Portland made it evident he had lost the team. If that becomes evident later in the season, maybe he gets fired during the season anyway, or he may just be able to hang on. Particularly given point two.

2. I have a very strong feeling that RVs time would have been up at exactly the same moment it was anyway. I think Smatresk was gonna do that no matter what the football results were (unless it had been a bowl or better maybe). If Portland hadn't happened, maybe he would have preferred to leave the hire of the new FB coach to the new AD. Now we are in the unfortunate situation, that Baker is not responsible if  we are all wrong and SL doesn't work out, and it may take a very long time until we know whether Baker is good at hiring the successful football coaches or not.

Or someone forcing him to pull that trigger...

Assuming you mean Smatresk, I don't think so.  RV could be a hothead.  Smatresk - not at all.

I'm not Jon Snow (whoever that is!), but I'll admit I know nothing.  I'm just basing it on the way RV was let go.
