Rice has >6,000 students. Only pointing that out because the actual number more than triples your estimate. Still nothing compared to UNT!

Granted only 3800 of those are undergrads.

Yes....Scott Davis and Scott Hall.

Rick

I never saw Scott Davis, but I would put Vizza this convo too.

Is it okay that I love Mason, but don't think he is setting the world on fire? I feel like there is a small but vocal group of glorifiers that would hiss at me for suggesting anything negative.

You're not alone. He is young, so there's a ton of room to grow and get better. That's the biggest positive, IMO, his upside is tremendous. If he can develop physically and avoid major injury....

Frankly, he has a long way to go to match the careers of some fine freshmen QB's at NT.  Maher, Davis, Hall and Kenny Washington to name most.   I know Washington started off better, but don't remember the first few games of the others.   However, I can't imagine many freshmen QB's have started off much better than Fine has.  With the exception of BC, the offensive line has left him completely unprotected too many times.

Fine obviously could turn into something special.   We are already comparing him with some of NT's bests not the NT QB's of the last decade.   I really have not seen much based on the state of the team and the competition that is negative.   Leadership, toughness, arm strength, and speed are all pluses at this time.  With four games experience, he doesn't always make the right decisions; but he doesn't make a lot of mistakes.

Agree with most of your post, but I don't see the arm strength.  He has a good looking spiral and they have some zip, but the long balls seem 50/50.  Sometimes he places it perfectly, but there are some that have me holding my breathe: under thrown and the DB is in position to pick it off.  If you're going to miss your deep target, don't you want to overthrow it?

Having said that, zero turnovers vs. Rice.  Tons of upside.

One positive thing that stood out at me while looking at the box score is ball distribution.  He had 17 completions and no one caught it more than 4 times.  By comparison, Rice QB had 22 completions and nearly half of those were to Zach Wright.

Just something to keep an eye on as we move forward.

Probably depends on the deep route. If you slightly under throw a go/fly route the receiver can try to adjust and make a play. If you over throw him there's not much he can do about it...

I understand this post. But 17/29 224 1td 0int will do just fine. He will need to grow into the offense as the offense grows. The faster he improves, the faster the offense as a whole improves. He's not setting the world on fire, but he's not losing us games either. For now, I'll happily take it.

Those were 2 great QB's alright, but Mason Fine is doing what he's doing on a team that at this point does not have near the supporting cast Scott Davis & Scott Hall had.

SUMG & I  used to compare Dave Campbell's Texas Football recruiting notes & during Darrell Dickey's  2'nd year in Denton his staff recruited 8 Texas Top 100's that meshed well with the Scott Hall era.

Of course, the late Corky Nelson during our 1-AA era was recruiting players around Scott Davis that would beat several SWC teams & a home-cooking officiated near miss at UT-Austin in 1988.

GMG!
