For the vast majority of our history, we have been known as the Eagles.

As has been pointed out someplace else in this thread, our defense started being called the Mean Green in 1966. So this is the 50th year of Mean Green. So for 53 years, we were the Eagles and for the next 50 we've been the Mean Green. That's hardly the vast majority of our history. Actually, with the growth of the school the vast majority of our alumni attended since we've been Mean Green.

Yes, there were some references to "Eagles" during the 1AA period, but that wasn't consistent. I know Homecoming was even during that period was always "Mean Green"

Maybe this is a silly question, but has anybody thought to ask Joe's thoughts on this?  I've got a maybe unsubstantiated feeling that he might not be too keen on it.

His sons have said he would love it, but thought it would be more special as a surprise if it ever happened.

Yes, the DEFENSE was called "Mean Green" in the late 60's, but not the team.  To say "50th year of Mean Green" is a misrepresentation.  And when were the non-football sports officially and uniformly called "Mean Green"?  I'm not sure about the 80's, but throughout the 90's all sports teams, including football, were called "Eagles."  It was very consistent during that time.  So I'm certainly not among that "vast majority of alumni" you reference.  "Mean Green" was just a second nickname, like Michigan is called "Big Blue."  And it was well into the 00's before RV changed the women's sports into "Mean Green" from "Lady Eagles."

Unfortunately, my wife threw out my Go Mean Green tshirt I bought for homecoming 1992 or I'd take a picture and send it. Somewhere I still have my old "Mean Green" hat from 1994 I bought and wore to the games that season as we were trying to get back to 1A football. I bought both in the University bookstore before games.
