Some accuracy issues, but he looks like a good leader and he's athletic. He seemed to make the right decision, but the throws were off a bit. He did have some good and bad plays erased by penalties. Some drops.

Honestly, it's really hard to evaluate our QBs right now, because the pocket seems to always be at/near collapse. He made some great plays, but you could see him lose the lanes at times if he had to step up in the pocket. If he has to step up, he's best off tucking and running.

Also, idk what the deal was with our WR. They were blanketed all night, no matter who was in. Idk if it was a timing problem or a get-off issue. In a few instances, it was a penalty issue.

Passing game as a whole was off. But Fine looked better than Morris, and it wasn't close.

He's going to have some growing pains.

Cover zero made the mid range throws or throws over the middle tough since the WR's were routinely unable to beat defenders in 1 on 1 Matchups.

You don't understand Okies. In a state virtually run from pulpits, where license plates used to say, "Oklahoma is OK" (just ok?), where every set of directions begins with "turn right at the church"...social graces are sacrificed on the altar of reverse snobbery. We go into every situation wearing our inferiority complex on our sleeve, knowing that whoever we may encounter automatically thinks they are better than us. Steinbeck got it when he wrote "we take a beatin'all the time..."

Wow, sounds like Okies and the UNT fan base have a WHOLE LOT in common...

not family ...i just have a huge amount of respect for the kids talent...i wasn't trying to show any disrespect to the fan base here that's why I said "homers" you know the guys that live in fantasy land, where UNT has 9 national titles and has all those 4 and 5 star recruits, and how dare the coaches bring in a kid to play QB that's not 6"3. With that being said, Mason wasn't his best last night but managed the game well....the receivers looked lost at times ( the play calling maybe) hopefully everything will start clicking soon and you can see the kid sling it.

PS. Where can I get me some mean green gear?

I really don't think there's a person alive who lives in that fantasy land.

I don't even recall somebody saying exactly that, although all else being equal I imagine any coach (or fan) alive would take the 6'3" QB over the 5'9" QB.

If you are looking online, the official site is http://shop.meangreensports.com.  But you can find gear all over the Internet, someone recommended a site the other day.  If you go to Denton, you can find gear all over.

You're thinking of Texas without the North or you're thinking of SMU.    Now if you had said 9 conference titles and 2 and 3 star recruits you might be close.

As far as quarterback height goes, if you'd been here more than a few months, you'd know that the last coach would often choose height over ability much to the disgust of many on this board.

Trying not to drown in all the green kool-ade, , but might the SMU game have been more of an end of 4'th quarter nail-biter with the pro-active leadership of true freshman Mason Fine (adrenalin over-throws & all)?

If, if if, but gosh if we could have opened with BC instead of SMU.  WHO DID DAT' SCHEDULE?!?!??

No disrespect??? No one here has even close to the delusions you mentioned. Mason wasn't his best? You came swinging in with his manhood down your throat guaranteeing we'd see the next coming of Mike Vick. He performed as well as true freshman we had years ago named Vizza. So yeah we've seen this before. Back pedal much???

I like Fine and glad he's here, but remember he is lucky NT took a chance on him. Remember that....

Just Scatter'shootin' From the Hip

(A few thoughts post BC win).

But first this quote:  "Catch yourself on fire & people will come from miles around to watch you burn." (Kirk Cousins, Washington Redskins QB)

I know I'm gushing all over the place with Mason Fine in this my 4'th decade of following Mean Green football, but for heaven's sakes, we've had 1 winning season the last 12 years so we have to hang our hat on something that will get us excited about this program & its easy to do that with QB Fine.  His size?  Can you say, uh, Drew Brees?  (He's just 1 inch taller than Mason Fine).

Yada! Yada! Yada!  Still, it appears to those who'd know that maybe we have all those new faces in the right places, but we know our prior regime did not leave us many scholarship players. Upon debuting our football palace Apogee Stadium we did not recruit to that enormous selling point as we should have.  Why?  Who knows?  Some do know, though.  > >  >One great UNT alum extremely close to what's going on up there I ran into at half time last night & he told me:    "We played before 36,000 North Texas fans and alums in the Heart of Dallas bowl game then the very next year our HFC has a losing season and says:  "I CANNOT WIN AT THIS SCHOOL."  (You can if you & your entire coaching staff recruits, Coach).:(

HERE WE GO AGAIN (Sing it, Dolly)!

My Junior year at North Texas made me think of all those teenage HS years I was a Houston Cougar fan growing up in the vGreater Houston area.  Back then Coog' fans wanted SWC membership which would come but the journey to get there was quite exciting, too; especially one game in particular and that a 20 to 20 tie game at DKR featuring the new UT Wishbone versus the Houston Veer.

Our Danbury HS football team was on the road to play a Saturday game at Schulenberg's Sacred Heart HS, and our HFC Harold Humber (surprisingly) allowed our team to listen to UH play Duffy Daugherty's Top ranked Michigan State Spartans en route.   We could not believe what we were hearing from UH play by play guy Gene Elston.  It was a program changer for UH as the Spartans never did figure out how to contain the Houston Veer offense that day and the Coog's massacred Michigan State that afternoon & shocked the entire college football world.

FAST FORWARD.......After North Texas beat Houston 28 to 0 in Texas Stadium and then the SEC's 6 & 5 Tennessee Volunteers in 1975, I thought to myself "well, hot damn, our school is following the very model of the UH football program & by golly we are going places with this athletic program."  So 1975 became the bell weather for many of us who called ourselves Mean Green fans. Matter a fact, it still is with those of us who are still kickin'.

So Why Not North Texas?   Why should we look down at our shoe strings & say we are not worthy?  We are as worthy as the next darn school among those who we were once on a par and in the same conference with like Houston, Louisville, Memphis, Tulsa and Cincinnati.  Again:  Why not North Texas?  I know there are a million "but's" and "if's"& "we can't ever do this here"  but at some point we will have new blood and new faces who will re-catch our lightning in a bottle to show us all other-wise.  God, please just let it be this group.  This is our time.

I love this picture--but the reason we don't get to use this venue to our advantage like we hoped is that the stadium NEVER looks like this, in terms of attendance, since that original opener against UH back in 2011.

Our recruiting must get fixed with TX HS recruits, coaches, and parents. All they have basically known is that we are a loser and haven't really cared for too many of the last 25 years. And that apathy has rally rooted itself in the psyches of these of these adults. Now, it appears we are really trying to fix this, but it has to be seen by these TX HS coaches and parents.

Dodge, because of his name, recruited here the best overall for his tenure here, while Dickey probably had the best class we have ever gotten. But overall, our recruiting has just been putrid. If Littrell and company can fix this, we will be on our way. If not, we will stay where we have basically been for the last 20 years in FBS play. And its that last part, that scares the hell out of me--because we wont be FBS much longer I we cannot get this fixed within the next 5 years, IMO. That ultimate FBS culling is coming--and I just think the teams in the MAC, CUSA, and SBC aren't going to be long for this level of play. At least the teams in the MWC, AAC, and leftovers of the Big XII when it folds, will still get to play the Power Leagues, which is why it is a must that we win soon in football and mens basketball, to get a spot in one of those leagues.

Well, in that vein, McNulty was offered a PWO status at Iowa--until Uncle Dan came to the rescue...

I think Fine fared a little better against the FCS he played as a freshman vs McNulty as a senior.

Just a tad...

Fine has a bright future here--he can actually throw a ball with accuracy more than 5 yards down the field.

But I will add that McNulty is a great alum...

Yeah he is lucky that he chose us rather than stay on as a preferred walk on at OSU and O-freaking-U .

Pay his way or get paid to play football? Walk ons have ZERO guarantee they'll earn a ship. Yes, he's lucky NT gave him a full ride. I'm glad he's here, no doubt. But let's not act like NT turned his commitment from a P5 powerhouse.

For whatever either of their reasons both OU & OSU made a last minute effort to get him on their respective campuses.

Mason Fine told both of them:  "Sorry, I'm going to North Texas."   (He honored his commitment to our coaching staff).

I agree. I think they realized their mistake just like UT realized its mistake when it spurned Manziel. Even the major programs make recruiting mistakes. Was Jerrod Heard any better than most QB's coming out of high school at that time? Obviously, time has shown otherwise.

Doesn't Fine have some Native American blood in him?   If so, he qualifies for tuition waivers at OU & OSU.  He would be going to school virtually for free.
And a preferred walk-on is different from a normal walk-on because they are guaranteed a roster spot.   He turned down a great opportunity to remain committed to us.   I think that speaks to his character and to the relationships coach Littrell & coach Harrell built with him.

LIke Mason Fine is about 100% Cherokee Indian, perhaps?    Good idea, MeanGreenTexan!

I have a nephew who is 25% Sioux, but he never used his Native American Indian waiver from what used to be called the Bureau of Indian Affairs.

BTW, not sure how it happened but my nephew somehow ended up going to the University of North Texas as an Accountant Major .}:>)

He has a successful construction business in the Mid Cities.

Roster spot still doesn't guarantee a ship.

It's all a moot point anyway. He's here and I'm glad he decided to come to Denton. I'm more excited with him than I was with Rodge or Vizza. He certainly shows some special ability.
