Now that football season is starting I would like to hear the board's opinion of who is UNT's rival for football? I know many may say it is SMU, but a rivalry is two ways. They don't rate us. We are the poor public school kids. They are the douche bags who paid private school prices for a public school education. As much as I would love a rumble with the South Side Socs, I mean what would be cooler than beating a guy and getting to say "stay gold pony boy" (forgive The Outsiders references). Outside of the illegality of a rumble, the ponies just wouldn't show. We aren't in their universe. So I pose the question, who is our rival?

For me it cannot be UTSA. That gives them a certain legitimacy that I just can't stomach. We have been playing football for over 100 years, albeit mostly badly, but this johnny come lately just can't justify the visceral response that a rival brings. UTEP has regional rivals in UNM and NMSU, and they are UTEP (before you hate on me I am from El Paso. UTEP sucks). Perhaps we need to create one? My vote is LA TECH. Why? Because I know nothing about them. But what I do know: They are an established Div 1 program that is road trip distance from Denton, Texas. Sure so is Rice, but no one cares about RIce. Maybe LA TECH already has a rival like UL-Lafayette, or Louisiana Monroe. I don't know. But I think there is a chance would could build something...

Anyways looking forward to the group's opinions.

I think it's either SMU or UTSA. People keep arguing that SMU is a one sided rivalry. But I've see the pony forums and I can begin to differ that we aren't getting their attention a lot. (The characteristics of a rivalry) I think UTSA is our conference rival. And we finally got our win against them to start a rivalry. It will become more of a rivalRyan if we can trade W's here and there. However, I hope UNT always beats them of course.

He's right, you know.

Dallas Morning News called UNT one of 4 in-state rivals. At least that is the piece I read. I don't live in Dallas so perhaps I am missing some in-depth piece into the rivalry. I would bet the students and alumni don't share that opinion. At least last year at Ford Field the rank and file SMU crowd could care less that we were there.

I'd have to say SMU certainly doesn't like us and I know most of our fans don't like them. Especially the little prick who sat in our section last year and was escorted to Dallas County for the evening.

You aren't going to deveop rivals of any kind with an ever changing schedule like our ADs have always done. You have to play to have a rival. Look at A&M, no rival. UT plays OU no matter what. A&M looks sad with Texas in their fight song and doesn't acknowledge them. Essentially like Doc Holiday and Johnny Tyler in Tombstone. "I forgot you were there. You may go..."

UTEP is trash. (And I too say that as a person from El Paso.) I agree with most about UTSA but they certainly get under a lot of people's skin around here. All in all I hope we play a consistant set of schools. (Like Army & SMU series plus conference games.) We'll find several schools to hate.

I say UNT just plays to win as many as poosible and we fans should cheer and drink beer.

The lip service I (as well as many, many others) received from their fans suggest otherwise. Beat the absolute dog piss out of them in Apogee (again), they will start to hate that they hate us.

The don't like to lose to us. Got it. I just don't think it is much more than that. Specifically because they "believe" they are better than us. On and off the field.

This^^!! They are already talking about the fact that SMU has yet to win in Denton. One guy was posting all of Vito's camp reports on their board too. Rivalries are born on the field over time. Just beat their ass.

I'll take a different tack. We don't have a rival. We have never earned one. Perennial losers dont have rivals.

When this football team becomes a real program. The kind that rarely, if ever, finishes below .500.  Our rivals will become clear.

As to potential rivals. I think SMU is a natural fit with the poor kid/rich kid story line.  We just need to beat them more for it to be a rivalry and we need to beat them when both teams are good.

La Tech would make for a good rivalry.  a lot of Dallas area kids choose to go to school there.  Having a friend in the opposing stands always helps to creat rivalries.

Still none of this matters as of yet. 4 winning seasons in 20 years. You don't have rivals.

I agree. We should hate them. Those kids are spoiled rotten. Trust me. I knew several from my gated neighborhood growing up. Our security guard tormented all of us kids. I hung out with the Socs before I got a football scholarship at UNT and ended up a Greaser like all of you. We should fight them in a park. Stay golden Pony boy.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, your post is correct. We have been far to busy losing to worry about one particular opponent.

UNT doesn't have rivals.  A rivalry requires peers with whom an emotional and competitive history is forged.

Nobody else in the FBS even thinks about North Texas, except as a potential warm-up game.  We haven't really been competitive with anyone since we returned to 1A/FBS football, except for the brief NO Bowl era.  Number 128 doesn't have peers.

The G5 conference scramble keeps any long-term history from being developed.  Regionally, SMU really doesn't care about us, and we don't want to develop any attachment to the "new" FBS programs because, ya know, we're better.  Somehow. . . .

I'd say North Texas really hasn't had any true rivalries since we exited the Southland Conference.

At this point I'd say MUTS is a rival, because we've been playing each other for a good while now and battling it out in some key games.  It's a longer standing rivalry than any we had during our dip into the Southland.  Although it's probably not a rivalry that our fans get tremendously riled up about these days.

From a fan perspective, SMU is definitely a rivalry.  We did just smoke them two years ago, so no one can claim that we haven't been competitive with them.  And during the lifetimes of most college students, it's been just about even between the two schools.

Rivalries are forged in a number of ways.

Teams hate each other, usually because one assumes an elitist position over the other. Think UT over A$M. UT believes its neighbors to the East are hicks.

One team has an inferiority complex as it compares itself to the other. Historically, UT was THE state school. A$M's good ol' boy students disapproved of UT's starch-collared, button down, daddy-gives-them-a-Mustang fans. City vs country, law/oil vs farmer/engineer.

Epic games. Ok, we are lacking in this area but 2014 sure qualifies to me.

Fans that care. Lacking on both sides. Our passionate fans outnumber, but pale financially to, our neighbors to the South.

So using this grading system, we don't qualify as an Aggie/Longhorn level rivalry, or even a TCU/$MU rivalry. But hell, Central and Western Michigan's think they are rivals. Let those that want a rivalry, and think we have one, call it a rivalry. BTHOSMU.
